Chevrolet and GMC are letting out a lot more details about the new 2.8L Duramax Diesel engine that will be an option in the 2016 Colorado and Canyon. Today the two brands released more specifications about the future mini-diesel midsize pickups.

Among the most interesting data is the official horsepower and torque figures for the engines, the estimated cost increase over the other models, and that the engine will only be available in crew cab configurations in LT and Z71 trim.

The new engine will come paired to a Hydra-Matic 6L50 automatic six-speed transmission and comes with a special "centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) in the torque converter. Equipped pickups will also come standard with a Z82 trailering package, integrated electronic brake controller, a G80 automatic locking rear differential, and a 3:42 rear axle.

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon with the 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel will go on sale this fall. GM claims it is the cleanest diesel engine ever produced by the company.

So unless my math is off, base with destination on an LT crew cab short box V6 is $32,960. Diesel goes to $36,333. Not bad except, you have to figure in the convenience and safety packages that are required when you check the box for the engine, unless they are factored into that $3,373 price jump. On an LT V6 crew short box 4x4, its $36,000 with the two packages.

What about the little handyman.

What is he supposed to do with a crew cab and a shorter bed? He doesn't need a LT or Z71 trim also.

I know, I know there are highly paid marketing experts telling GM how to make the most money by forcing people to buy BS they don't need or want.

I like the truck and I like the engine.

But I don't like the politics.

Actually with the 2015 models you can pick either a short box or long box for the crew cabs. It is a little different setup than the full size pick ups in that regard. My only concern with these mid size trucks is at what price point do you say to yourself "Well I should just buy a 1500". $40k for a mid size truck is pretty pricey in my book.

He can do the smart thing and buy a base gasser. Running around town negates the advantages of a diesel, especially with fuel prices being what they are now.

So nothing was mentioned about the ZR2?

I wouldn't hold your breath. Sadly I think the most we'll get is that "off road" package they showed a while back with different wheels and Goodyear Duratracs.

Thanks for clearing that up for me :) .

My actual point was that again one has to buy stuff he doesn't need to get the stuff he wants.

A week ago the salesman couldn't match my idea for a price for a '15 6.2L Sierra.

I was only interested in the 6.2L not in all that stuff what has to come with this engine...I walked away.

The truck is still sitting in the lot.

Could be in my driveway by now.

And GM could have pocketed the extra cash for the 6.2.

Just saying.

MSRP was 61k and change.

2k rebates for what ever makes 59k.

He then started to calculate some stuff but I didn't really listening.

End of story is that I couldn't get him to drop below 50k.

Reasonable offer in my book especially since the 2016s are just around the corner now. Some dealerships just don't want to play ball.

Truck still in the lot sounds like someone could get a phone call sooner or later :dunno:

Yeah...but as per right now I've got only two favorite colors. Blue Ray Metallic and White Diamond Tricoat.

And this truck is Iridium. It has to be an extraordinary offer to get me to open my wallet.
