2014 5.3 Silverado Rough Idle and Shift (The saga of issues continues)

Recommended Posts

Well the saga continues for issues with my 2014 Silverado 5.3 LT Z71 that I purchased in December of 2013.

Originally took my truck into the dealer for a flashing check engine light and rough idle along with rough shift from 1st to 2nd gear. The check engine light was a coil that was bad in the number #8 cylinder. Truck only had 9000 miles on it. They said they could not replicate the issue with the transmission (typical response from what I am seeing on the forms.) This whole time having my truck for 9 days. Still have the issue with the rough shift and idle.

A week after my truck was returned my door actuator went out on my front passenger side door. After that was fixed another week went by and my front driver side door actuator went out.

I took my truck in today because of another check engine light, the truck idling rough, the shift from 1st to 2nd being rough, my seatbelts on both front seats always locking at all speeds (only way to disengage the lock is to completely remove seatbelt), and my usb plug in in my center console not working. My truck has 40,000 miles on it. I was told the check engine light was a bad fuel tank pressure sensor. I was informed since I was 4,000 miles over my bumper to bumper warranty that it was not covered and would cost around $650 to repair even though I have only owned the truck for a little over a year and a half.

Left the dealership in a rental as they did not have the time today to diagnose the transmission issue(only after sitting at the dealership for 3 and a half hours only to run the code). So now I am out of my truck again for who knows how long. Both rentals I have had are the same package as mine. Both rentals have not had the issues with rough idle or shifting either.

It's ridiculous that I am having all of these issues on a truck that I bought brand new. I bought a brand new truck to have peace of mind that I would not have any problems and frankly all I have had with this 2014 5.3 Silverado is problems(with no answers). Starting to get old real quick.

(Side note this does not involve all of the safety recalls that I have had to go to the dealership for. Airbags, transmission connectors, computer reflash etc.)

My neighbor's 2014 had a very similar issue @ 25,000 miles. First the dealer said the tranny was going out, so after a week of driving a loaner and his truck in the shop he got it back with a new transmission. A week later same exact problem. He said his was downshifting really hard, like banging from second to low when coming to a stop sign and sometimes the same when up-shifting, he said it was shifting really harsh. So, back to the dealer it went again. Turns out they said it was an injector issue and they replaced all the injectors. He's been driving it about a month now and so far the problem has not returned.

Isn't the fuel tank pressure sensor considered part of the emissions system? If it is, I think GM is supposed to cover it under the Federal Emission Control Warranty. I could be wrong.

The rough idle and transmission shift issue are probably related. I'm guessing there is an issue with the engine - could be as simple as a defective sensor. If the engine is running poorly, the transmission is seeing bad data and trying to adapt/compensate. In any case, the service department should be able to scan the engine in real time to see what's going on.

A little update. I was told I would hear from the dealership on Monday 8/17. Did not hear a thing. I called this morning to talk to the service consultant who I went to last week and went to his voicemail. Still waiting for a callback. Have not heard any information at all about what is going on with my vehicle.

Well I have called numerous times and have left 4 voicemails with both the service consultant I met with last week and also the service director at the dealership. Have not heard anything back. Starting to get a little ridiculous now not hearing anything back on the progress or any information at all regarding my vehicle.

Well finally went up to the dealership yesterday. Was told GM is going to pick up the tab minus a $100 deductible I will pay. Was told I would have my truck back today. Haven't heard anything so I'm guessing that is not going to happen.

Alright well I finally got my truck back yesterday 8/21/15 after a full week of the dealership having my truck. In regards to the transmission shifting rough and the engine idling rough they said they were "unable to duplicate". As soon as I got back in and drove down the road it still was idling rough and shifting rough. This time I even pulled out my camera and got it on video.

Fuel tank pressure sensor is taken care of. Only issue is they did not reinstall everything correctly as now I have a loud metal on metal clunking noise underneath the vehicle whenever I hit a small bump. So back to the dealership next week since I'm assuming they didn't install something properly.

2014 Sierra owner here I have 90,000 on mine and tranny died today... Have had it checked twice once in the last month and told no issues..... So I have it in shop getting new tranny and my anual radiator ( they keep leaking from same spot and GM refuses to admit there is a flaw, so every year I drop a grand on a new radiator )

My suggestion trade in your 2014 before you rack up the miles

a grand on a radiator? my 15 has a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty. wouldn't that be part of the power/ drive

No they do not consider radiator part of power train... I'd you smell antifreeze at all and are under 36k take it in .... They have a very small leak in the passages side.. You won't see any leaking but you can smell it..... My 14 has the 100 k power trane as well and and with under 9k left to go they can't give me the " can't duplicate " excuse any more on the tranny .... It barely made it into the gmc dealer today the tranny starts slipping at any thing over 1800 rps
