Stabilitrak, Power Steering, Gauges & Display Going Haywire

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I didn't find a topic on this and I'm wondering if others have had these symptoms. Within the last two months, and sporadically, my gauge cluster and display (the info display and nav display) flicker, and my AC turns off. This only lasts a couple seconds. The first time it happened was when I was overtaking someone on a two lane road, after hammering the throttle.

The second time it happened was when I was turning into a parking space at a store (weeks later). This time, however, the power steering shut off and my truck seemed impossible to turn. This too only lasted a couple seconds. But potentially very dangerous.

Now yesterday while I was turning into a parking lot off of a street, everything began to flicker/shut off and my power steering was non-existent. All three times, the info display kept reading an issue with Stabilitrak.

I know there are a couple outstanding recalls on my truck but I don't remember what they're for. Also, I have 34" OD tires on my truck and it is not programmed. Are the tires causing this issue? I know a lot of guys with big tires on their 2014's and none of them have the tire sized programmed. They're not having this issue.

I am going to bring it do the dealer this week. Are they just going to blame my tires?

Thanks for any help.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a 2015 Sierra that is having the same problems. The service stabilitrack and service trailer breaking system lights have been coming on every now and then but on longer drives the gage cluster goes crazy just like your talking about.

Last week I took it to the dealer and they told me there was nothing wrong, so I picked it up and on the drive home it did it again so I brought it straight back. The next day they said they found a pinched wire causing the problem and that its all fixed. I pick it up and just like the day before its started doing the same thing on the drive home. I dropped it off at a different dealer this morning to have them look at it and a few hours later I got a call from the service manager telling me that he is 90% sure my lift kit is causing the problem and that I completely voided my warranty by having a lift. Now they want me to pay a diagnostic fee just to trouble shoot it when there not even sure what the problem is.

Hi there guys. I have a bone stock 2014 and I am having the same issued. Most of the time the issue occurs when I am pulling into a driveway or going into a parking spot. At times the car died to the point that none of the courtesy light or door chimes would work. No lift kits. No radio add on's. I have taken the car to the dealer twice and they "cant duplicate the problem" so that means nothing get done. On top of that, the service guy says that no trouble code are being stored. That means, they have to be plugged into the truck if/when it happens again. Honestly, my truck is unsafe. I almost hit another vehicle because the damn steering locked. Thankfully it happened for a split second and then released but the potential for sever damage is very present. Maybe we should consider a class action suit to have the GM engineers to pull their thumbs out of their ass long enough to resolve this issue.

I just heard back from the second dealership on the issue, they were also unable to duplicate the problem and same thing there are no codes being stored so they cant pin point it. Their "technician" claims its a loose wire or something is grounding out somewhere in the vehicle. But because of my lift the dealer is saying my entire warranty is void and it has to be something that happened when the lift was installed. They want to charge me 6 hours labor just to diagnose it and even if it has nothing to do with the lift, it wont be covered because I modified the truck

At first I started having the problem when I was parking, then it stopped for a month or so and know it only seems to do it when I am on a longer drive, or the truck has been running for about a half hour. the last time it happened it kept turning my steering assist on and off, this cant be safe when driving down the highway at 60+....

On my trip to North Carolina last week, I had my stabilitrak light come on and later the day I received a service back up camera notice as well. Nothing since. I'm thinking it might be low voltage causing your issues. My truck is starting to slow crank and both of my messages came on with the truck not running and the key just in the on position which is why I'm leaning towards low voltage.

Thanks for the replies. I will post an update when I finally take it into the dealership. Soosick13, I'm not happy to hear the dealership offered you no help. They will likely offer me little help as well. Is your truck programmed for your tire size? Originally I was sure this was my problem. I may try BlackBear.

Halobound, I'm very discouraged that this happened with your stock truck.

20Bowtie14, maybe you're on to something with the low voltage issue. The headlights on my truck, on occasion, will flicker whenever I apply the break or turn signal.

I have tried reprogramming the truck for tire size but I still get the same issues (I tried running a diablo tuner but took it off before I dropped the truck off at the dealer). Please keep us posted if anyone finds anything out, I would love to get this problem fixed with out having to pay the dealership an unknown number of labor hours to troubleshoot a problem they know is there but cant find.

FYI, they can't void the entire trucks warranty due to the lift. I've owned a lifted truck and they can only void the parts replaced. Don't let them tell you your entire warranty is void. Unless they can prove the lift is causing the issue, there's no reason they can't diagnose it. If they can't find the issue, well they can't find the issue. Soosick13, it sounds to me you have a BAD dealership. Heck GM sells the Rocky Ridge and gives a full warranty on that truck. Thats a 6" lift with 35" tires.

When I had my lifted 03, the dealership was very good with things being modified. As long as the problem didn't pertain to the lift, everything was fixed.

Stevens14 thanks for the reply, I tried to tell the dealer if the problem is in any way shape or form related to the lift I would pay for diagnostic and repair time out of pocket. Other wise it should be covered under warranty but the service manager told me that even if it has nothing to do with the lift I would still have to pay because the lift voids the entire warranty, which I know is BS. That will be the last time I take a vehicle Starling Chevrolet in Orlando. I'm going to make an appointment to drop it off at a different dealer and see if they have any luck.

Over the past week I have been in contact with GM's customer service and keeping them up to date on the problem. They scheduled me an appointment tomorrow morning at a different dealer that will hopefully be able to find out what is causing this issue, I will keep everyone up to date if I find anything out.

UPDATE:

Brought my truck to the dealership yesterday morning. Got it back today. (A roughly 6 hour process, but I also got lingering recalls taken care of.)

The invoice reads as follows:

"Service Stabilitrak light comes on and dash and radio light goes blank when this occurs

Found radio programming in IPC to be incorrect settings, reprogrammed radio"

**************************************************************************************************************

"Power steering shuts off when service Stabilitrak light comes on

Reprogrammed HVAC due to B1325, U0020, U1509 being set and mismatched programming"

**************************************************************************************************************

"Inspect for recalls/campaigns via GM VIS system: Cause: 9100630 14126;

Reprogram instrument panel cluster"

**************************************************************************************************************

I'm surprised these issues were 100% program based. I even asked the service manager if he was sure there wasn't any loose electrical connections or bad sensors and he said there wasn't. I hope this actually took care of my problem but only time will tell. I will of course keep everyone updated if I still experience any problems.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the update. I just got off the phone with the service tech at the dealer, they are still unable to fin the problem and want to keep it another day. I will be sending a copy of your results to my dealer to see if this helps with mine.

Soosick, let us know if and what your dealership finds to be the problem with your truck.

Another update:

The problem persists. Yesterday the truck went crazy again - "servce stabilitrak" along with flickering/shuttering gauges and AC - power steering stopped briefly and this time the truck actually shut off. It was when I was pulling out of a driveway.

This morning, I noticed on my way to work (dark outside) that whenever I pressed on the brake, my headlights would flicker. This has happened previously. These two problems are related, I'm sure.

I will be calling the dealership later today.
