"Reduced engine power" troubles

Recommended Posts

I need some help here. A few days ago while driving on a bumpy road the display on the truck (2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.0L) started to go crazy. I had all sorts of fault messages popping up as well as the gear position light kept moving through the gears from drive to park -back and forth-when it showed park my door looks would open and then shut when it went back to drive. It finally stayed in " reduced engine power" and lost accelerator. I ended up shutting it off and had to wait several minutes and REP was gone. This happened every 1/4 mile till I got home.

So long story short found a bad ground wire from the wire harness to the rear of the engine block. I knew it was bad when I touched it the truck died. The wire broke off in my hand. I ended up splicing a new wire in and grounding it to the aux battery negative terminal because I couldn't get behind the intake to see where it was bolted to.

Thought that was going to be the fix but now about half the time I get "Reduced Engine Power" at START UP. Only.

Do you think they way I grounded it is causing my problems? or something else.

I've done all the wiggle tests and cleaned intake and connectors as suggested by many forum posts.

Help is needed. Thanks

I replaced the pigtail today but no luck. I drive it around for about 20-30 minutes with out any problems then let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and then when I go to start it goes right to "reduced engine power" mode. So it seem it happens when it's warm. I guess I going to have to start throwing parts at it. I've checked all the wiring and can't find any issues.

I just posted on this forum about my recent issue with my 2011 Chevy! I had a loss of power, stable track warning and a couple other lights pop up. When I took mine in they said the engine had a "mis fire". I was driving the truck slow at the time and from out of nowhere the truck enters the infamous "limp mode". They had to tear my powertrain apart they said. They had to replace my pistons, rings, gaskets, bolts, plugs, and much more. This was all from a "mis fire". The work they did didnt make much sense to me at all, but I dont know much either.

I have read many times on the forum about situations such as yours though. I came across those items while looking for help with mine. Ive read it can be an issue with the throttle sensor that is now supposidly under a new warranty due to this issue occur i g so many times. It's not a recall but its suppose to be something that is now covered that normally would be out of warranty now. I believe i read they extended the warranty on that part to 120K miles. I hope some of this can help you! If you have an ideas about my situation id appreciate what you would have to say. I'm worried about keeping my truck at this point. So much of what ive read said that the work I had done didnt help them out in the long run! And at a cost of over $4K I cant afford to pay for this the next time. I wish you well with your problem and sorry youre going through it! Take care

Have to say, it sounds to me like you were ripped off by whoever 'diagnosed/fixed' your truck. Going into limp mode shouldn't require new pistons/rings unless you ran it out of oil.

Hey Davester, yeah the whole experience that I went through was nuts for sure! I dont know if the dealership was just trying to make some extra money somehow with this being warranty work or not. But like others have said about running low on oil. They have said their dummy light nerver came on except when it was almost done dry on oil. My light never came on, so who knows maybe it could have been running low on the oil but I doubt thats what happeded and heres why. If I had run it dry of oil I would think the dealershiip wouldnt cover all of ths under the powertrain warranty. They probably would have said tough luck idiot.

So with my situation the jury is still out. BACK TO OP, sorry for the small HJ of your thread that wasnt my intent at all to do that. I'm still waiting to see that if anything I wrote helps you with your situation. Again sorry for the possible HJ to your thread!
