LT load rated tires

Does anyone know why so many tires now are rated as LT or E vs P or standard load ratings? It used to be that there were a ton of choices for 1/2 ton owners, not so much anymore. I know i would love more than 3 sizes of 18 inch tires that aren't LT. Like a 275/70 or a 285/65 but no luck. So anyone know why we can't get these sizes in anything but a hard heavy tire?

I guess my post got moved. This was in the 14+ mod area due to the popularity of these tires on those trucks. Can it please be moved back? I don't see how it is any different than any of the other 30 tire posts in there.

if you have not noticed, the p ratings die much younger. For comfort, not real strength.

 

looking at sidewall weight limits.. not sure how by law they have gotten away with it this long.Engine power and braking is only getting bigger. LT is a safety issue.

I predict p-rated will stay in midsize and smaller. kinda like that wimpy toyota six lug that found its way onto a fullsize chevy. Still happens today in fact..just rummage through ebay and the ignorance of not revealing gmc hub hole sizing.

 

I'd swear that is where that p rated truck tire came from.. long running nightmare for me personally. You are lucky to be on the 18s, that lost all the midgets trying to be a fullsize sale. I am still at 16 inch, many dangerous overlaps bolting right on from other models.

 

some half tons, like v8 manual tranny.. they pulverize them p rated. Automatics take a little longer, but do the same thing.

It really depends on how the vehicle is used. I personally never get anywhere close to weight limits of the truck. Mostly up and down the highway like most truck owners today. I bet under 15% of todays 1/2 tons built actually get worked hard. I wish they would build the tires and let the comsumer decide what they need is all. I have zero use for a LT rated tire but do have a use for an all terrain. Oem size, one size wider, and one size taller are available but not together in one tire.

 

After all the do make a 305/55-20 in a standard load range so why not a 275/70-18 or 285/65-18?

Now the have LT Ds and even LT C rated tires. Not sure why you would want P tires on any pickup. I have seen cars pop tires instantly hitting something in the road that doesn't even leave a mark on a set of LTs.

I'm closing in on 1 million miles driven on p or standard load range tires with no issues. I prefer not to put a 3/4 or 1 ton tire on my 1/2 ton. No need for it for me.

Have you spent much time on 10 ply tires? They don't ride much different than 4 ply if they're inflated correctly. You can also get 6 ply C range tires, which are usually close in weight to the SUV tires. It doesn't seem like there are a lot of selections in 18", maybe go up to 20" or down to 17" if you want flats that badly. :)

Yes i have had them a couple times and got rid of them asap. My oem tires are 35lbs. Don't want anything heavier than 45lbs per tire.

 

Zero flats almost 1 million miles on p rated tire.

 

Not a discussion on why i don't run Lt but one on why they limit 18 inch tires.

 

I don't carry heavy loads and i don't visit consturction sites and i don't go off road a lot. Like i said no need for me to run a 55+lb tire.

Your best bet would probably be switching wheel sizes then.

I have already decided on my 18 inch tires. Not changing wheels. Just disappointed with the choices available. They make 265/65, 275/65, and 265/70 in standard load rates. Why not 285/65 or 275/70? That is all i am saying/asking. Just looking for info as to why the limited sizes if anyone knew. Not a debate of Lt vs p or what i should use.

I agree for sure. One ice storm here local, I have snow built up on the bottom of the tire to the perpendicular sidewall parallel squatted to the ground.

 

I am one to look for odd half tons, my first chevy was a "heavy half" ton. 1979. LT tires for that one too.

When one really deciphers 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton... I am disappointed.

There is an 8 lug 3/4 ton, that is headed for the 1 ton while looking like a pickup. That is something I fall for. The wimpy 3/4 ton.., may as well find the custom ordered 1/2 ton.

 

Anyway, I believe p-rated are going to fade away into the little trucks.

 

I just purchased , just yesterday, some kumho road venture... 120 sidewall LT, S on the speed rating.

If you don't want to have to run a 55lb tire, get rid of your truck and buy a car. The tires are built that way for a reason, to handle the weight of a truck and what the truck is rated to haul. Don't know what else to tell you other than maybe you purchased the wrong vehicle?

You can find plenty of 275/65/18 tires wit ha standard load rating. I run that size on my 2010 and there are plenty of choices. The sizes you posted are not very common and are not in demand, that's why you can't find them with the small SUV "P" rating.

thanks for the judgement and the all knowing. i have a use for a truck, why i own one. did not purchase the wrong vehicle. it came with p rated tires. just looking to upgrade size and tread. no use for heavier load ability. the factory tires are rated to handle the trucks ability. i have used that size before and was happy with it but would prefer a 285/65 in a non lt. i imagine if they were available more people than just myself would buy them. not everyone uses there truck to its max. maybe some people carry large loads, that are not heavy, up and down the highway. i think there is a very small percentage of 1500 owners that actually need a lt tire.

So 4 out of 4 members here think 1500s should only be used with LT tires. How dare GM, Ford, Ram, and Toyota put p rated tires on almost every 1/2 ton they build? Guess you guys know something they don't.

 

I never once asked did i purchase the right vehicle for my use. I never asked for anyones input on what tire i should use. Thanks for all the answers, ignorant assumptions on how my truck is used, anyway.

 

I joined this forum because it was free from most all of the bs on the other forums. You guys just showed this one isn't special.
