Million miles-2007 GMC Sierra(gmt900)

Recommended Posts

COLUMBUS, Ga. – How many neighbors do you know who have put a million miles on their vehicle? We found one and it’s a story we thought was worth sharing in tonight’s News 3 Neighbors.

Columbus native and Phenix City resident, Tommy Bush practically lives on the road. He is a parts coordinator for a fork lift company in Pennsylvania.

Bush bought a GMC Sierra 1500 back in 2007 and just recently rolled over to 1,000,000 miles, but the only problem is that the odometer will only go to 999,999.

Bush says he covers 17 states and usually travels between 160 and 170,000 miles a year and replaced the engine at 409,000 miles because it had a bad valve in it.

Tommy says he averages 150,000 miles on each set of Michelins he put on it. He has gone through six windshields, five gas caps, only two batteries, and almost broke down once.

“I came real close one time, changed the alternator on it at 840 something thousand miles. It went out up in the mountains and I actually made it to a dealership to get it changed. That’s the only time I come close to breaking down,” Bush says

I guess a new motor doesn't count as a break down?

What is he doing to all these gas caps?

4000 to 5000 pounds in the back of a 1/2 ton?

Yeah, I wasn't going to get caught up in the details like you pointed out. I've never had a problem with any gas cap..... Perhaps there is a clerical error on the meaning of "break down". He probably limped it into the dealer.

Still impressive none the less. Jay, you'll be up to that club here shortly!

The story makes no sense and is very deceiving. They openly admit engine replacement at 409,000. That is nowhere near a million miles. It's nice he still has the same truck but it only lasted for half the mileage he is claiming.

Million miles and no mention of the trans or fuel pump. I am at over 180k on my originals and know they are on borrowed time. And 53k on the trans is behind an LQ9. There is more than what is reported.

Given all the flak the 900's have taken over the past few years, am still impressed.

I know technically the motor was replaced & as mentioned, it would have been better if it was the original.

Not sure how often he truly ran it loaded, but am guessing it has worked harder than 90% of the trucks as

most seem to be mall crawlers with the family anymore.

Million miles and no mention of the trans or fuel pump.....

Thinking the same thing. My fuel pump went @ 155K. (To extrapolate would suggest >6 fuel pumps should I see 1mm miles)

Gas caps are part of emissions testing, at least up here anyway. I consider fuel pumps a regular maintenance item. I had 217,000 on my 04, original fuel pump, had the original transmission. Anything is possible.

He has 600,000 on the second engine, thats great to hear too.

Still great news.

Id drive mine a lot longer if rust was not a factor.

No idea what Georgia does but some states test gas caps as part of emissions. Or given the miles, the retention strap may be gone and he's just forgetful at pumps.

As for the engine, rebuilds are less and less common. Much quicker and sometimes even cheaper to throw a long block in it.
