VW reacting fast, heads will roll.

I honestly would rather go buy a VW over A GM right now (with a gas engine  moot point since I'd buy a Mazda first) GM scumbags still working at GM besides a few. VW saying in the Press Release(point 6 on their list) they are going to review who was involved, basically send them packing, and hand over the names list for (possible)prosecution.....and their scam didn't kill anyone!

If all other countries affectes fine VW (remember, 500,000 cars in US, but close to 11 million worldwide)....

This could be the iceberg to VW's Titanic

This whole thing has my mind blown. I cannot believe a company like VW would do something so stupid. It was only a matter of time. The brand is going to seriously suffer as a result. I've owned a VW Tiguan and they make excellent vehicles - this is a real shame in my book.

I'm really interested in hearing more about the technology that was in use to defeat these tests. In one report I read, it actually mentioned something about a system injecting a chemical to mask emissions level. To me that reads that there was actually hardware and technology installed in the vehicle for this exact purpose which goes to show the level at which they went to be dishonest. If that is true I'm surprised a mechanic hadn't noticed this sooner. Staying tuned on that one.

I really hope as this picks up steam no other auto makers are found to have been doing something similar. Something tells me this is more widespread than just the VW/Audi brands. I really hope no American auto makers were this stupid.

The CEO will probably get a nice multi-million dollar buyout upon his release too, whereas if I lied about something at this level in my job, I'd be out on my butt with nothing but a kick in the rear.

That's like saying the gm techs should have known about the ignition switch problem.

How would a mechanic be able to pick up on this? Our jobs are really to fix broken cars, not re-engineer the vehicle.

I work as a master vw technician and I had no knowledge of this defeat software but Its embarrassing to be at the store and people start acting like it was my fault. All I can say is I fix the broken ones not engineer the car. I'm curious to see who programs the ecms. The vehicle manufacturer or the ecm manufacturer?

Sorry for the rant.

This post makes no sense at all........What point are you trying to make???

Why are GM employees "scumbags"?? Very curious as to why you believe people that are employed by General Motors are scumbags, and what does GM have to do with VW as an auto manufacturer?

from what I've searched on Google, Bosch seems to be the Main ECM Supplier for ALL of the German Manufacturers (much like Delphi is GM's Main ECM Supplier); so it will not suprise me in the least if Bosch gets pulled into this scandal.

They supplied a test software for vw to compare with real world figures and advised the uppers at vw that it would be illegal to use in production cars. Someone gave the go ahead to install it into production cars. That was in 07 and in 11 an engineer from vw questioned the software too.

I am utterly shocked a company like VW made such a boneheaded move. It make you think about what other companies out there are doing that have yet to be caught; not just in the automotive business. Especially considering VW had prided themselves and tried to position and brand themselves as a "green" company, the financial impact of this disaster has even begun to be realized. They'll be lucky if the my don't have to file for bankruptcy.

Yup they risked it all to save about $360 a car. Thats what I read it would have cost to have urea in the cars from 2007 and up.

Now they lost billions & who knows the outcome....dumb move

And if so what is the mechanic supposed to do or even better, how many mechanics do you know would risk their job for blowing a whistle?

The truth is most people keep their mouth shut because the cannot afford to lose their job. Happens on a daily basis.

The same stupid mistake made GM with "switch from hell" and they did it for saving way less... remember? They were saving cents.

And of course there are many more companies out there doing the same - you should know that by now. How can you not know that.

Certain people don't care about the normal folks.

Remember the foreclosure crisis? The same people who did this to "us" are still doing the same job, making the same profits and they don't care about nothing because they don't have to and because they just can do whatever they want.

(even though it has nothing to do with VW I recommend watching "Inside Job")

I am sorry for the workers - they'll get hit hard.

And if I go and buy myself a car / truck I just buy what I like -

Not just the workers, some analysts are saying Germany's entire financial system is at risk. VW plays a major part of their economy.

Inside Job is a great movie.

Haven't checked this thread in a while, so sorry for late reply.

I was referring to the exec's that tried to sweep the ignition stuff under the rug(and did for years). There were emails that came out where engineers warned about what eventually happened, said the fix would cost pennies per unit, and if I remember correctly, they even found out one of those emails had made its way to Barra. When a employee earns of a safety concern that can be fixed for pennies, and they say no..... Scumbags.

And then they tried to cut out compensation for NON drivers! So if people in another car died, zilch.

At least VW started firing guys left and right immediately, it took weeks before GM did.

For comparison:

There was a story the head of xbox during the RROD scandal walked into the office of the MS CEO and told him they found a massive hardware issue that was their fault, but they could make it right to the tune of a billion dollars loss, the former xbox head in a recent interview said Balmer responded "do it" with no hesistation. That was over a product worth a few hundred dollars and many of them were out of warranty, and had no chance of hurting someone.

This is just another segment of the reality show "Screwed by the EPA" EPA was too busy taking Navistar to the woodshed for a couple of years to notice the VW thing. They really put the screws to Navistar over their Maxxforce engine and the company really took a serious hit. Canned their CEO and have been trying to get their market share back. Now that EPA has more time on it's hands, they needed to find someone else to chastise and make them have a come to Jesus moment. VW was a prime target. This was not the first diesel OEM to get hit up side the head with a 2x4, and it will not be the last. This kind of thing is what the EPA lives for and uses to justify larger budgets and more personnel and regulation. Even with the VW stuff as they were doing it, their diesels are exponentially cleaner than anything they put out 15 years ago. Same is true for all diesel OEM's. That a motor might put out 1/10th of 1 percent more NOx than the regulations allow is really picking at things. Heck, the exhaust coming out of a new diesel nowadays is almost cleaner than the air that went in the intake. But this is the world we live in.
