Best Advice for Best Gas Mileage

I've read articles about best ways to drive to consume less gas including some threads on this forum. My question is: What is the number one thing you noticed you do that has positively impacted your fuel consumption on these 2014+ trucks?

The photo below was posted on another blog which astounded me. Yeah it's only the last 25 miles but unless I was driving downhill for 23 of them, I don't think I could come near this. The only information about the photo is that it's a current generation Silverado and the owner was 'hypermiling' with no specifics listed. Needless to say it sparked my interest on the topic.1446416420394387630.jpg

What will the last 25 read right after reset? Will it read anything until 25 miles have been traveled? Just wondering if you had just reset while on a downhill or something.

I wish I knew. It's not mine. Just a picture from a post I read on a blog.

Probably faked, photoshopped or something.

I think the biggest things you can do so slow, easy starts/stops and don't run like a bat out of hell. I'm not sure 55mph is sweet spot for today's autos but I'm sure it's not 80mph. Sometimes cruise isn't best option especially in hilly roads.

I've gotten as high as 24.7 on my truck leveled with 33's and no air dam. The guy who posted that said he was doing around 45-55 the whole way IIRC. To get my 24.7 i was taking it easy going up and down hills on the highway and "country highways" around 50-65mph. The key is a very light foot, steady to easy off throttle up hills and gain speed going down the other side with light to moderate throttle. Cruise control is not the best with these trucks when you're looking for maximum mileage.

I had those types of numbers in Colorado going downhill for long distances on the highway. But even doing 55 on flat highway for long stretches you won't do much better than 25.

Best mileage comes with truck at stock config (tires, suspension, weight) and driving slow. Accelerate slowly, let truck up shift quickly, coast downhill. Be most mindful of your stops = coast as much as you can and anticipate turns and lights. The brakes are the enemy of gas mileage. I normally average 17 to 18 in daily commute, but have squeezed out 20 by doing this just to see if I could. It's painful to constantly drive like that.

Also be mindful and courteous of other drivers.

My best 50 KM right now shows 5.7L/100KM. So in excess of 40 mpg.

All downhill at ~120 kmh.

I bet I could duplicate it or even improve on it.

Going up the same stretch I was ~25 L/100km or under 10 mpg. Also doing 120.

35mpg in the last 25 miles..............My 2007 Cobalt would show really high numbers right after resetting. Best I seen on that car was 98mpg.

Most likely what the trickster that posted this picture did. It was either reset or a photoshop job. That fuel mileage is impossible, could never happen, ever while real world driving.

My best 25 mile average is 35 MPG. This was on a flat road, 55 MPH, and going with a strong wind for about 30 miles. I have got over 30 MPG on that same stretch a couple times (again WITH a strong wind). Those results aren't typical and my average when going 55 MPH is probably around 25 MPG. Going 70 MPH is probably around 20 MPG. These numbers would be with no wind (which is rare here in ND).

I don't see anything like this mileage in my regular cab 5.3. I only get 15 to 17 mpg. Maybe I have to move on top of a mountain to get better mileage at least one way.
