Why black wheels?

Why do you like black wheels?

I hope I don't offend anyone but I am really curious as to where the prefernce for black wheel look got started.

I am a child of the 60's and grew up playing with Hot Wheels that all had wheels like this:

I dreamed of driving a car with wheels like these:

So everytime I see a nice looking truck with black wheels it makes me think of this:

Now you can see why I like the wheels on my new truck:

So if you are a fan and can post stories/examples of what influenced your preference for black wheels I'd like to know.
Who knows, maybe I will become a convert :)

I have the same wheels as you. They look nice but they are a little too bling for me. I have a brown truck and am debating going with either black wheels (easy to maintain) or some old school looking classic metal wheels (the ones with the circle cut outs around the inside of the rim). Sorry I don't have time to post photos. It's obviously just personal preference though.

I did however shine up my current wheels and they do look nice. I may just end up keeping them.

Personal taste man. I think they give a vehicle a more aggressive look. Also a lot easier to maintain than chrome.

But yours aren't black all the way, they have silvery accents and I think they look great.

I'm asking about the ones that are all black.

I get it is preference, just wondering about influences.

I dont have black wheels on this truck, but one of my previous trucks, I had aftermarket black wheels.

The ones I now are brushed and painted aluminum. Doesn't change the fact that I would like to have them powdercoated black though.

I think it is MOSTLY a generational thing. Those from my generation (mid late 60s) mostly prefer chrome, those from later generations seem to mostly prefer black.

When I see (particularly flat or matte) black parts I think "he couldn't afford to finish it". Like when I was a teenager the guys that ran around with primered parts and painted bumpers because they could not afford to get them re-chromed.

I'm considering sending my Hellcat wheels out to be chromed.

It's about preference and taste. To me, the black-wheel trend ended almost a decade ago. About 11-12 years ago, I had OEM wheels cusrom painted black with machined rim lip on my '3 Z06 because I can't stand the fact that a black wheel "disappears within the "black" tire; the machined rim lip gave the wheel a definition between the two.

Nowadays, among the multitude sets of wheels I own, there are two sets that are black. One is a set of CCW C10 that I bought used for my '8 Z06; race slicks are mounted on these wheels and I kinda don't care about how they look on a black Z06. Plus, the black-anodized finish is actually somewhat purple in certain lighting and it hides the brake dust. The second set is 20-in Status Grinder on my Solstice; these wheels have a large chrome-plated "applique" that needs to stand out, thus the wheel itself needs to "disappear". Tires on this car do not get sidewall treatment and left dull and clean so as not to detract from the "applique".

In a nutshell, again, it's just about preference and taste. I chuckled when hearing references that "black wheels are bad ass".
