Cost of 100,000 mile scheduled maintenance

Recommended Posts

So my 2002 Sierra now has a little over 102,000 miles on it and I took it in to the dealer for the100,000 mile scheduled maintenance. I was thinking probably somewhere around $400.00 - $500.00 max. So tell me if I'm wrong, but I was floored when the rep told me it would run anywhere from $1,400.00 - $1,500.00!

He said the scheduled maintenance includes replacing all the transmission fluids, crankcase fluids, the radiator fluids, spark plugs (which makes sense), all the spark plug wires, and replace the fuel filter.

I just looked in the Owner's Manual and here's what it says to do -

Inspect spark plug wires.
An Emission Control Service.
Replace spark plugs.
An Emission Control Service.
Change automatic transmission fluid and filter if the vehicle’s GVWR is over
8600 lbs., if the vehicle has an Allison transmission or if the vehicle is mainly
driven under one or more of these conditions:
– In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90F (32C) or higher.
– In hilly or mountainous terrain.
– When doing frequent trailer towing.
– Uses such as found in taxi, police or delivery service.
If you haven’t used your vehicle under severe service conditions listed
previously and, therefore, haven’t changed your automatic transmission fluid,
change both the fluid and filter.
Automatic Transfer Case Only: Change transfer case fluid.

Even if they did everything he said they were going to do, their quote sounds absurd to me.

Am I full of it???

Stay away from the dealer ... unless your wealthy ...

I could be wrong BUT some of the items you listed are not yet needing service - others here can advise

A local honest independeant will do you right - time to find one

I'd only worry about the fluids, if they haven't been done before. If the rad and trans have been done in the last couple years, leave em be. The spark plugs can go a long time in these trucks. I went nearly 150,000 miles before I did mine and they were still fine. I only did them cause I didn't want them to become seized in.

How ridiculous. I would do the serpentine belt/ac belt, plugs, wires, coolant, front and rear diff and transfer case, fuel filter, oil change, air cleaner, fuel filter (ONLY if inline, not if in tank) and call it a day. All of this can be easily done yourself.

So you are saying $1500 to do a trans service, coolant flush, plugs. fuel filter, wires ? Trans svc at my dealer is $130 or so....Coolant flush ....$150, plugs....$100, ....so your $500 or so is what my dealer would charge....$1500 bucks rings of BS....what is that 8 hrs labor and $600 bucks in parts....

Oil

Transmission pan drop, filter change and refill

Spark plugs and wires

Air filter

Transfer case drain and refill

Differentials drain and refill

Coolant flush and new thermostat

Replace coolant hoses if needed

Check brakes

Check belts

My mechanic did trans, xfer case, diffs, coolant and thermostat for around $300. Everything else I did, and it was all easy. No way I'd pay what your stealer wants.

The last truck I kept over 100k miles was an 04 Z71. I ask an shop owner friend the plug question, he said wait for the check engine light. At 180K when I traded it in it still had the originals in. That trucks transmission and coolant were good till 150K. It really depends on how long your going to keep it. If your not a do it your self type it still cheaper than truck payments to pay to keep it maintained.
