Wireless charging broken?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Is anyone using the wireless charging feature in their 2015i+ models?

I find that both my Note 3 and the S6 edge will charge for only 10 minutes at a time and then stop. I have 3 other wireless charging pads and have had zero issues with them. I have also tried both orientations, pushed to the top and bottom. Same results.

Is anyone not having troubles?

My dealership replaced the console lid which no longer closes properly and didn't resolve the charging from stopping after ~15 minutes.

Is anyone able to wirelessly charge their phones to 100%?

Original console replaced with my original. Got thinking that GM used a single coil in the charger, making the sweet spot smaller. A carefully cut piece of wood confirmed this. If the phone doesn't move at all, it keeps charging. Move it less than a centimetre, it'll disconnect.

The better charging pads out there (for desktop use) have 3 coils.

Great idea by GM, poor execution.

I have a similar problem in that the charge pad won't charge through my case. The three coil types do charge through the phone case. Purchased the 3 coil guts here..

but I haven't figured out how to open the lid yet. Does anyone know a web page the describes opening the console lid?

I've found that if you place the device on top of the rear ledge it charges every time no issues. Now again, if it moves you're still SOL.

the wireless charging feature is a cheap gimmick I have a Motorola Play Droid phone and only way the charging works is if I take off the protective case that has two parts and a frigging hassle to put back on the wireless charging things is useless to me

I have the new iPhone 8 with built in wireless charging and a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the wireless charging pad. Charging pad is not working have tried with and without the phone case. Any steps or things I can do to get it to work?

JPC,, having same issue on a Tahoe. There is another conversation on this forum discussing it also. Search Iphone 8. I have contacted GM infotainment reps, and both dealers here. Nothing yet. I know the vehicle pad works as my friends Samsung charges fine even with a case. I set my Iphone 8 on a charging pad at Best Buy and also charges fine. Not sure whats next but very disappointed. I know the 8 just came out but GM and Apple must talk.

The iPhone 8 requires an Apple certified wireless charger. Just like when the Lightning connectors first came out and licensing was required.

GM wireless charging has 2 major issues.

#1 GM pad thickness is almost 2mm thick, this greatly reduces charging capability,

especially if your using a case. I removed the GM pad and replaced with a thin leather like material.

#2 problem physical size limitation, for newer phones and cases, the sweet charging spot is further back on the larger phones and you will need to move the position all the way to the back edge.

If you remove the bezel the rubber pad will lift out and you can trim to fit.

max. phone/case width 3.1 inches with Gm pad removed.  I now can charge my S8Plus with the phone case, installed no problem.

Just got an X and it won’t work in my 2017 Sierra. Found an article that stated GMC 2017 and earlier were not Qi certified. So won’t work with the latest gen iPhones. Lame

I swapped the charging module out in my 2017 Sierra -- I also had to swap out the connector... it is kind of difficult, you have to be careful.

Thread here.... read up and order the parts.  My iphone x charges perfectly now.
