I'll write up something more substantive on Thursday when I get back to the office but today we had a chance to take a Duramax Canyon for a spin.

A few things that stood out

  • At idle, it's actually a little noisy from the outside
  • Awesome torque across the entire RPM range
  • Not too quick to accelerate - The 3.6L is faster
  • Turns these midsize trucks into full size capable for 90% of people
  • We were able to get around 30mpg on our 30 minute loop
  • This is a killer chassis / engine combo!

More on Thursday!

So Zane, when are we going to see these trucks on the lots! Post above says late 2016! If that is the case they are going to have a lot of POed people!

Well, the 2.8L VM diesel motor (base engine of the new 2.8L Dmax) in my 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4 Sport lifted with a complete Frankenlift II suspension, was able to pull off 27 mpg averages with over 32 mpg averages on road trips. Pulled off a few 35 mpg average road trips. Driven right, and maybe something like a tune to shut off EGR like I did with my Jeep, it is not unrealistic to see 30 mpg regularly out of the the 2.8L Dmax in the Colorado/Canyon 4x4.

Just contacted the folks at Green Diesel Engineering that did the tune on my Jeep, regarding the new 2.8L Dmax......

We have a Colorado on order, and as soon as it gets delivered we’ll get to working on it for having a product available soon. The engine in the Colorado is a very close derivative to one used in the Jeep Wrangler overseas that we’ve had experience with dating back to 2006 so it shouldn’t take long to make good progress on how it runs.

Stay tuned, we’ll start posting on our website and various forums once we’re making headway.

Regards,

Matt

Very interesting indeed. They need to put a Diesel in a 1/2 ton then, I'd be interested but, I like the width of a full size truck too much to get one of these little guys.

I have contended all along it would not be much of a stretch to bump up the displacement of the 2.8L to 3.0 or 3.2, and bump of hp and torque in relation to that, and have a good, strong diesel for the 1/2 ton without having to blow a lot of resources on R&D and production. The Ram EcoD is 3.0 and a more complicated V6. A 3.0 inline Dmax would be simpler to produce, based on an already existing engine that was developed from a reliable tested base VM Motori 2.8L, which is better in many ways. Cast iron block with wet sleeved cylinders and DOHC 4 valves per cylinder with a reliable common rail fuel system. Would drop in the 1/2 ton with ample room to spare. Easy to get in and service anything. Since it makes sense in a lot of ways, that means GM will probably miss the boat and not do it. We'll have to see if they have any common sense left.
