Looking for Help...Plasti Dip All Terrain Bumpers

Recommended Posts

Just looking for some help with this...looking at PlastiDip'n my front bumper on my 2015 All Terrain to protect the painted bumper for the winter from stone chips off sanded roads. I am wondering how hard it comes off after an entire winter? Will it be enough to protect it? Also looking at doing my OEM oval chrome side steps to protect them. Looking for any advice or experience you have had with PlastiDip. My climate for winter is cold, living in NB, Canada!!! Thanks.

Wouldn't say we have anything near a hard winter here in KY, but my plasti clear coat has lasted for ~17 mos or so without any issues. It's due a redo, but still holding well actually. And it has DEFINITELY cut down on chips. Big time. Not clear bra performance, but far from clear bra price as well.

Be sure to apply a decent amount. Say 4-6 coats, and you'll be able to pull it off with ease. If you do have trouble, just remove the bumper and remove the plastics and you can use the dip removal stuff from dipyourcar.com. Stuff works like a miracle! But they say not to get it on black plastics, only reason why I suggest removing the bumper so you can remove any plastics from getting hurt

Did you ever do this. I was thinking of doing this to my front bumper over the chrome to protect it. I might but the clear bra for it and then dip over it for extra protection.

My main concern is what it will do to the sensors.

Also how many cans did it take and does the clear dip yellow?

The more you apply the better. For a front bumper on our trucks I'd say use 4 cans at minimum. 6 would be ideal in my opinion. Dont forget to prep the bumper by washing it and wiping it down with alcohol or xylene. If you apply the dip thick enough it offers great protection. I dipped my whole truck matte clear (using the dyc sprayer not cans) and will be doing it again after winter. I did redip my bumpers and grill white to match my truck after I peeled it a few weeks ago.

Honestly cans arent ideal for big areas because it the end result is usually streaky and uneven. For chrome make sure to apply 2 light tack coats, then 2/3 medium coats, and finally 1-2 heavy coats. Heavy enough to where the dip almost runs from too much product but not quite. This will result in a smooth finish.

Also the dip will stay fine for a long time. DYC recommend spraying a fresh coat after two years and peeling after 3 years max. If you do happen to spray the dip too thin, once it comes time to peel it buy some Goo Gone. Spray on the Goo Gone and let is soak for 5-10 minutes and use a pressure washer to spray off the dip. The Goo Gone reliquefies the dip to make it come off easier.
