It still baffles me why people will spend $3-4 hundred for 10 extra hp. on a 355 hp. engine (5.3)

I have no plans to install a CAI on my truck, as I prefer to stick with the factory air box for now, but I don't see what's so baffling to you. I agree that CAI's are not cheap and only offer minimal gains, but some want to get every last bit of performance they can get out of their vehicle, without getting into the engine itself and voiding their warranty. This limits you to the exhaust and air intake. I've personally done an Airaid MIT and Borla Catback Exhaust. Once my factory warranty is over, I will definitely get a tune. And I will probably get a CAI to go with it, so as to maximize performance.

My point was $300-$400 for 10hp.on a already strong engine, might be worth it on an old turd from the 80's or 90's. (V-8 180-200 hp.) And i do agree stock tunes are mostly for MPG.

It has been proven many times (there is a write up by blackbear and many examples of these on camaros)

WITH a tune yes

Without a tune you'll get at least the 10hp advertised. When I dyno'd my truck stock I first got 345/374 at the wheels. Cracked the stock air box and then got 350/380 at the wheels.

The trick is I found is to remove the plastic/ foam piece between the box and the body. I know you "could" have slightly higher inlet temps in some situations. But everywhere else when it's moving it breathes better. I will get a MIT and run an "Open" factory box and you get everything a 3~4 hundred$ intake will give you. I don't care what people say, the right intake and cat back/muffler combo WILL give you a real world 15~20 RWHP + more tq. Just have to run the right ones, in general no( there are a lot of gimmic intakes, and poor flowing mufflers with non optimal sized piping). When these components are Well thought out, yes "Some" gains are there..
