The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are a huge success for GM. Each month the trucks sell out. The new Duramax diesel and Canyon Denali versions of the mid-size trucks are keeping interest alive and the Colorado is the Truck of the Year two years in a row now. It must be killing the bean counters at GM to know that with all this success Toyota Tacoma still outsells the pair by a huge margin each month. The Tacoma is a great truck beloved by its fans, but it is not buyer interest that makes the GM twins sell less each month, just production capacity. That may soon change.

Mark Reuss is the number two person at GM (and a great guy who fully supports the auto media) and our own Zane Merva had a chance to interview him last month. Zane asked if GM would expand capacity and Mr. Reuss confirmed that the company was trying hard to find a way to do that. Multiple outlets, including Automotive News are reporting today that GM has found a way. The plan is to subcontract the Chevy Express and GMC Savanna to Indiana-based AM General. GM trusts AM General, having subbed out the last Hummer to the company. This would free up some space for more Colorados and More Canyons. AM General is a manufacturer of tactical vehicles for military use, but has the capacity to do the work for GM.

Sweetness. More AMerican jobs (see what I did there), more American built vehicles, more good! These vans are probably like assembling those HMMWV's as they are a simple architecture compared to say Silverado or the small twins. This will be big for Colorado/Canyon, so hopefully they can keep the steam on high and the train rolling. Lets hope quality stays #1 as well. Surprised they didn't fire up Janesville Assembly though and employ formers from there.

Cheaper to sub out the work than reopen a plant. Hey, it is still staying American. At least it wasn't subcontracted outside the U.S.! Gotta look for that little silver lining.

  • 2 weeks later...

AM General used to be the government contract subsidiary of American Motors.

Government contracts were lucrative.

And of course, the famous US Postal jeeps of a few decades ago.

AMC sold AM General in an attempt to keep afloat.
