Thoughts on moving to a 2500

Recommended Posts

Off and on I have been contemplating a move to a CC 2500. So I have been searching the interwebs and found a new 2015 Silvy 2500 LT CC 4WD gasser. It is rather loaded, with no leather.

Now my story. A year ago I bought a 2014 Silvy 1500 only to find it was a little short on payload. So in August I bought a 2015 GMC Max Tow and I LOVE THIS TRUCK! I was fortunate that I basically broke even on that deal.

Now while I love my GMC, I wonder if a little more payload, a little more motor, and a little more braking power isn't the right move. Currently I tow a 27' Jayco TT and it weighs around 5,000 pounds. And I carry 6 total occupants when camping. I am well within my limits of the max tow but I wonder about a future TT and there will be one, just not sure when. Most of my camping is local (within 100 miles) in the flat terrain of WI. However we are going to Yellowstone this summer.

This 2015 Silvy 2500 is being offered at $42,600 and they are offering me what I paid on my GMC. So another potential deal with no loss.

So my question is this, is it worth it?

Yes....especially if it's not costing you anything

Been there done that

I was never one to be in the "anything over 6000lbs needs a 2500hd" club

But now that I have a 2500hd it makes towing all the more comfortable

Braking, suspension, sturdiness in wind were very noticeable during my first tow

Mileage on the 6.0 with 4.10s is horrible tho.....but the ride is so much better when towing

I have a similar experience. I was towing a 26' travel trailer max weight about 7000lb with a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 w/ 5.3 with the 3.42 rear end. It did it. It wasn't comfortable and on big hills and mountains as well as windy areas it was really uncomfortable situation. I just didn't like the towing experience (even with all the sway control and weight distribution).

I upgraded this year to a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 with the 6.0 and 4.10 rear end. It is a beast and night and day difference in strength to my 1500. It's not even a close comparison.

I haven't towed with the 2500 yet but can tell it is going to handle it easily.

It really depends on how the current tow experience is and how big you will go in the future. I wanted to upgrade to the 2500 before any major upgrades came just because the current drivetrain w/ 6.0 is so tried and true - super reliable and going to handle anything I could throw at it. Also, resale value of trucks is insanely high right now so I traded by 2012 while I could get a great value.

Driving a 2500 is very different than a 1500. I would suggest to make sure you are comfortable in one. They get really bad gas mileage as well so be prepared for that.

How bad is the gas mileage? Yeah, I know it's a truck, but it's part of my consideration, albeit a small part.

Hate to say it, also looking at a R@&, 6.4, 3.73. But those forum guys say to get the 4.10, but can't find one.

Good luck with the Ram, I would never go down that road!

Mileage with the HD is going to be worse but you are talking $100 difference if mileage a year, not a big deal.

Yes it is I think everyone already stated the reasons. You will have a comfortable drive towing and be relaxed cause its a whole different beast than you got now, everything is bigger and stronger and yes it uses gas, but i didnt buy a 2500 cause i was worried about gas just like you i needed payload. Go test drive one get out on the highway you see my 2015 rides great.

Wow, dealer just emailed me and lowered the price another $1,000. They are really tickling my funny bone now!

Since this dealer is about 90 minutes away, I'm gonna have to go to a local dealer and "borrow" a similar truck and see if it fits in my garage!

Mileage empty 10-14mpg on the highway. Pulling 7-9mpg with the 6.0. Love my '15 2500HD CC 19,000 miles it pushes snow or tows a trailer each day. Never skips a beat.

I literally just did this. I had a 2014 Sierra 1500 and found out my payload was short. I also carry 6 passengers (including myself obviously). Honestly, I think even with your max tow, you may be pretty heavy on your payload with 6 people in the 1500. In terms of seat-of-the-pants, I really think the 1500 feels like it has more go. The 6.0 only has 5 more HP, but it is a much heavier truck. I bought mine for the extra payload and heavier duty towing. When I used to hook up my travel trailer to the 1500, it really squatted the rear end until I hooked up my WD bars. It didn't even budge the 2500. Suspension is definitely not as cush as the 1500 was.

It's a give and take. In order to tow safely, I had to get the bigger truck. I don't regret it for a minute. I love my 2500. It doesn't have the get up that the 1500 had, but that's the trade off. I didn't upgrade to win any races. At that price, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for that real world experience!

I'm under my weight limits for sure (2048 payload), but I hear ya on it could be a little better.

I went and test drove a 2016 2500 just to see how it rode. And it definitely rides like a truck for sure. I'll ponder that give and take tonight before making my final decision.

But it fits in the garage!!

Most likely the dealer had them pumped up to 80psi. I still didn't mind the ride, but lowering them down to the 50's will ride much better. It's no 1500 Cadillac ride, but it's still damn nice for a 3/4ton truck.

My '96 S10 is a rougher ride than the 2500

I'm pretty jealous on your Yellowstone trip. That was one of my top picks for our honeymoon, but it got veto'd for Maui. Not that I'm disappointed with Maui or anything...
