DIY coding of driver door switch module (2009)

glueguy

Question

2009 Escalade ESV

What type of scan tool do I need to be able to code the door switch module myself? Sure I can take it to a dealer but I would rather use the excuse to buy a tool. I have coding software for my BMW. I have to believe there is a solution for GM also, but it doesn't seem to be as common.

Sounds like GM figured out that they can upsell features after the vehicle leaves the dealership. Much like the remote start. Wonder how long until someone figures out how to reverse engineer this portion of the BCM. It would be a great app that could be sold to just about any end user for a cheap price. Since it would not impact the running of the engine or transmission, chances of end user hurting anything would be low. I have a feeling that the BCM code is highly encrypted though.

Starting in 2007 the architecture changed. There is now VIN information in the door master switch. I plugged in the new one and it is dead until I code it. Grrrr.

Once GM found out that they could sell upgrades via remote access they locked out the aftermarket. I recall when working for 3Com in previous life that they were selling routers (the big commercial ones, not the desktop models) that were identical across the entire product line. The difference was in what activation key you purchased. If you bought the base model because that was all you needed at the time, you could add in features at a later time due to your requirements changing. Customer would just call into support, give credit card number and model number of device, and support would send either a simple access code, or a new firmware. Car manufacturers have picked up on that system(actually picked it up many years ago). It is too bad that there is no readily available "hack" for it. Remote start is one of those features that is already installed and just requires GM to enable it in the computer(other than antenna and hood latch).

So what happens if I connect the new switch and don't have it coded? Do I just lose some functionality (like the radio not turning off when the door opens) is it really going to impact me? It's a pain to coordinate getting to a dealer. I wish I could do this myself like I can with my BMW. Hard to believe that it is harder to work on my GM vehicle.....
