In the first month of sales since the new Duramax diesel Chevy Colorados were available GM sold less Colorados. And not by a little. Sales were down 7.3% for the month. Notably, at 5,508 units, it seems as if Chevy sold much less than its total production output capability. Prior months had reached almost 8,000 units (December was 7,900) The Canyon was essentially flat with January sales of 2,270 versus 2,205 in 2015. The Canyon had sold as many as 3,000 units in prior months.

Clearly the decline in GM mid-size truck sales were not caused by Duramax diesel trucks being for sale. Very few were sold, though our own readers did post images of them on lots and we know that diesel trucks were delivered from other reports. By way of comparison, the Toyota Tacoma was up about 12% in January and GM's Silverado and Sierra also up for the month.

My thought: Drop in fuel prices = less demand for diesel vehicles. Not to mention FED has really choked the fuel economy advantage of diesel over gasoline with New emissions mandates.

I suspect its because of end-of-year rebates on all the full-size 2015 pickups. Most of my local Texas dealers have 50-100 of the full-size (1500/2500) but only 10-15 Canyon/Colorado. So hmmm, save $8000 or so on big brother or just $2000 on the smaller sibling. Hard to not choose the added capability of the fullsize when they come out awfully close to the same price.

Could be a number of things, namely price, and quality issues.

Diesels are done for IMO. Thank the EPA for that one. First GM killed them with the Olds 350, and now we've come full circle again with emissions crap. Was a good run, though. Fun while it lasted.

Too expensive period.

100 percent agreed... Who's gonna pay 40k for a Colorado? No way in hell. I was looking at them the other day and saw a mid level package one with cloth interior that was 39k.... Way too much.

I'm paying less to fuel my full size truck then I did my V6 Traverse, gas has dropped so much.

The dealers are still having issues getting diesels in Canada. Someone I work with got tired of waiting for his ordered one to come and just bought a Silverado instead.

Our weak Dollar is going to make it hard to replace my truck. Plus U.S. used car dealers are starting to buy up lots of our used Canadian cars. I don't blame them instant 30% discount. They can make more money re-selling them there.

Last auction I went to only one car was bought by a Canadian and that was just because he wanted it and overpaid. Crazy times.

What's the going price for a diesel Colorado in Canada? 58 grand?

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab Standard Box 4WD 4Z7 With diesel $52,316

As comparison My 2014 4x4 GMC Sierra Double Cab SLE all Terrian with all available option except the brake controller listed at $49,,225.00 paid $43K with discounts. I can't even replace my Sierra with the same options as they are no longer available on the Double cab for anything less than $55,000. So $55K with less options that's how bad our Dollar has become. Plus I don't even think they have fully price corrected yet I expect the prices to go up again.

I paid $30k for my Silverado in '07 - 4x4, extended cab, leather, Bose, heated washer fluid (that was removed due to fire hazard, LOL), heated, LED, power-folding mirrors, power seats - and I thought THAT was too much!!

Here's some of what you get to look forward to with a new diesel:

Way too expensive for a mid-size truck even if it can be purchased with a diesel engine. I looked at a 2015 Z71 last year and almost choked on the $38,000 price tag and the diesel will more than likely be around $45,000. Too rich for my blood and the technology is still untested.

Test drove a Diesel Colorado. Nice truck, except for the engine. The thing is so gutless without towing anything it makes me wonder if it can even tow at all.
