going to look at 04 Silverado

Recommended Posts

Going to look at a 2004 Silverado 1500 4x4 crew cab at a nearby dealership this weekend. Has 75,000 miles on it. Looks to be in good shape - minimal rust from pictures. Cloth interior. Priced at $14,000. If I can get price down a bit I plan on buying because I need a good 4x4 pickup and crew cab for car seat in back and cant afford a brand new truck at the moment. Does price sound reasonable and what should I be looking for with a 04? Also I will be putting on 15 - 20k per year max can I expect this truck to last 4-5 years?

Price might be listed a tad high for my area but with a little negotiating you can probably buy it right.

I'd look for normal stuff like leaks at engine and transmission, rear end and front axle seals. Check the instrument cluster as these trucks had cluster issues. Also check to be sure the 4x4 buttons work. If I had an extra $100 I'd take it to my favorite mechanic and have him look it over. Good luck.

On a lift check for RUST

Brake lines

Tranny lines

Fuel Lines

E brake cables

Starter Wires rusted at starter

Exhaust Manifold Bolts snapped off (near the firewall)

Rust under the hood could mean some of many rusted grounds that will lead to Check Engine Codes FOREVER

Could I expect to get 4 -5 good years out of this truck or do I need to look for something newer?

Yes. These things easily go to 200,000 miles. My '01, now owned by a friend, is up to 225,000 with the original engine and transmission. And she saw some heavy-duty towing that killed two rear ends.

I have a 2004, the following items have failed on mine and are fairly common failures:

Instrument cluster

Blower resister

Front left wheel bearing

brake lines. All were replaced with updated kit.

Big failure on my 04 were the heads. A small, but significant #, of GM trucks with the 5.3 had Castech head problems. No easy way to tell if it has Castech heads unless you pull the valve covers.

Currently I have over 160K on it and going strong.
