Recommended Posts

Been away for awhile have develop an interest in firearms and shooting in fact this forum got me started. First was Taurus .38 Spl Snub bought for home defense and then signed in on Guns Ammo forum and took off from there. Have learned a lot past couple months and have acquired three more pistols and rebuilt my Dads Shot gun. Second pistol was S&W Model 469 bought at Gun Shop and after researching and finding out 2nd and 3rd Generation series bought a Model 3906 . Newest is M&P Compact.22 and would like a couple of Revolvers and Rifle. Also completed NRA Basic and have my CC Permit.

Sounds like you're doing it right with the training. You should look into the various organized and casual shooting sports, in addition to the NRA activities. Lots to choose from depending on your particular interest.

USPSA is a competitive "practical" (combat style) shooting organization. I took to this shooting back in my 20s. http://www.uspsa.org/

My current particular interest is in shotgun clay target shooting and hunting upland birds, especially with vintage side by side shotguns. There are a number of clay target shooting organizations. The mainstream one is http://www.nssa-nsca.org/

Regarding collecting, I've been around "collecting" guns for a long time and dispersed some fair sized piles of guns for a widow or two. Most of us are "accumulators" of guns. Collecting is a entirely different activity and will consume more money than can be supplied by most of us. I have some legitimately collectable, expensive shotguns from the early 20th century. But I'm no collector. Here's some shotgun collector association sites I frequent. http://parkerguns.org/forums/ http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

Don't fall for the "guns are an investment" line. The guns from those that pass away are most often sold at a fraction (1/2 or less) of the gun store value or Bluebook value for vintage guns. Very few guns will actually yield appreciation in your pocket of any significance unless you make a concerted effort to buy low and sell high and learn the business.

They lose value after being fired like driving a new car off the lot. I really like my 2nd and 3rd gens and want a couple of S&W revolvers to go with them. I have been practicing and having fun with a M&P .22 Compact and have plans for a 9MM M&P, also on my list is a Ruger Carbine or M&P 15-22 . I recently rebuilt my dad JC Higgins with help from videos

Firearms are also an investment. You should not worry about any of your firearms dropping in value because they have been fired. Take care of them, don't get the wood all banged up and you will be able to sell it for the price you paid of better if need be. Firearms value can in no way be compared to vehicle value, it's totally different.

During the last panic, I sold one of my Colt "Law Enforcement" marked M4 carbine lower receivers for $3,200!!!!! I only paid $900 for the complete carbine but people were going nuts over that roll mark on the lower, which really means absolutely nothing.

After that sale, I was able to buy a few more AR's. Try doing that with a modern, mass produced vehicle, not going to happen, ever.

Don't worry about your firearms dropping in value, it won't happen unless you really neglect them. Shoot as much as you want and enjoy!

I only have 2 handguns. First one I bought was a Glock 19 and the last one is a S&W M&P 40 full size. I haven't even had a chance to fire the M&P yet, but have shot the 19 a few times. With cars and trucks I couldn't leave them completely stock either. I haven't done as much to the M&P as I did to the Glock but I plan to use the Glock as a carry gun whenever I can get a carry permit so I wanted it exactly how I want it.

I can tell stories about guns I paid little for and sold for more. I can tell you stories of cars I bought for a low price and sold for more. I'm driving a 2014 SS Camaro right now that I bought $3k below market because the guy selling it wanted to sell it worse than I wanted to buy it. These are more often than not, situations I am not looking for but have cash on hand to buy. I have a second 70 Series Gold Cup 1911 because a neighbor needed to sell it. I didn't need a second one and declined to buy it. The neighbor asked what I'd pay. I told him it was worth $1200-1500 on the market, but I'd only be willing to buy it for $500. He sold it to me. Deals are out there, mostly in used guns, in my experience.

Hi all been gone for awhile, my collection has been added onto and reduced a little past few months. I sold 469 to a collector and bought and sold a couple of Revolvers I cleaned and re Blued. Still have my Shield 9mm and 5906 along with a S&W Mod 65-3 and Ruger 10/22. The Ruger I installed Trueshot Target sights Kidd Charging Handle , Mag Release Lever and BX Trigger all bought on sale and EBay. Saving up now for a Ruger Single Six or Ten.

Keep at your " collection" and try to never sell one just pucker up and add more. I have spent a lifetime of collecting, stooting and trading (wish i had not developed trade fever) but have finally kept the numbers down to about 200. It all started with a DCM 1911a1!

Keep shooting that M&P Compact they are great pistols, we use one suppressed to finish off trapped Hogs in Texas.
