Chevrolet has announced an all new optional and retrofittable camera system for the 2014 through 2016 Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 that are equipped with factory trailer-towing mirrors.

The all new $999 option came about through a partnership with Echomaster and includes up to four additional cameras that can help a driver keep tabs on his load and trailer while hauling.

The system works with and is completely integrated with the factory MyLink infotainment system. Two cameras, one under each rear view mirror and an optional fourth camera that can be wired up to a trailer. Later this summer, the package will include a camera located in the 3rd high-mounted brake light so customers can check on stored bed cargo or easily hookup a fifth-wheel hitch.

Any of the four-camera views can be checked on at anytime by long-pressing the home button for more than 5-seconds. The factory backup camera still automatically turns on when the pickup is placed in reverse.

The multi-camera system also joins a new factory installed fifth-wheel prep package for 2016 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD. The prep package will cost $350 and includes a frame-mounted hitch platform and tray and 7-pin wiring in the bed. An optional CURT fifth-wheel hitch is available through dealers. A 20,000lb hitch will cost $939 while a 25,000lb hitch will run $999.

A couple of things:

  • You MUST have the trailer tow mirrors for this to work (won't work with DL3 or DL8).
  • The extra rear camera sends video signal by wireless BUT it must be attached permanently to get power (not easily moved from trailer to trailer).
  • The available 4th camera is nice for looking in the bed while the truck is in motion.
  • The price -- $999 (plus installation, and possibly plus the cost of the towing mirrors if you don't already have them).

All in all they look nice and I'm glad GM did something. It's also nice that you can fit them to any 2014-2016 truck, not just available on a new buy.

There is a pretty good video at Chevrolet's media site:

I just called the dealership I got my 2014 Silverado 2500 HD from and they told me no such factory upgrade/retro fit exists.

This product was just announced today at noon. I would imagine the dealerships will need a few months to get the part in stock and familiar with the system.

While this was just announced today, I am going to guess that the dealer was correct! You have the last year of the GMT 900, just like my '13. It seems this new system is only for the new '14- current 1500's, and '15- current HD's.

I do hope this is something I can eventually get through the dealership. I could really use a feature like this for towing a camper and all my stuff.

Great system - would definitely make life easier for me ... but with all these types of electronics coming to be the past few years, I can't help but think about the younger generation just getting their licenses.

They won't be able to drive a stick, or change lanes, back up, brake, or correct a skid, or pull a trailer without some type of electronic crutch. Guess there's going to come time when the used car market consists of solely middle aged people, since nobody under 30 will be able to drive anything without electronics! Things are progressing at a frightening pace for me.

Guess it's a blessing that I'll probably never be able to afford any of it anyway, so long as I stay in a state that continually steals every dollar they can from me, for "the greater good".:uhoh::(
