The upcoming 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be led by a 2017 Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition pace car. This marks the ninth time a Camaro has paced the Indy 500. Four Abalone White 2017 Camaro SS vehicles will be on hand to support the race.

Commenting on Chevy's participation, Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development and Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, said, “Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500 have a long, storied history and it’s an honor to mark the respective milestones of the Indy 500 race and the Camaro simultaneously. It’s also a privilege to have Roger Penske perform the driving duties, as his team has helped Chevrolet earn four consecutive IndyCar manufacturer titles since 2012.”

Team Penske is the most successful racing team to have run the Indy 500. Last year, the top four finishers were Chevy-powered, led by race-winner and Team Penske driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

Can't wait to see it. Anyone goi g to the race or any events this year?

Ryan

Going to the IMSA 5hr race at Watkins Glenn and to the Boston Grand Prix/Indy Car. I'll probably hit a couple of events at Lime Rock as well. Wish I lived in Indiana. Never been to the 500. Been to F1 races, Nascar, IMSA, MotoGP, etc but never Indy. Some day.

Can you really call the car a 50th anniversary edition when it wasn't made for 8 of those years?

They have a similar issue with the Corvette. It missed one year of production, 1983. I think it pretty much leaves only the Mustang to have been built uninterrupted throughout its entire life, so far. Only talking about "sport" type cars.

They actually made one but had quality issues so they shut it down to make it right

Anniversary comes from the word Annual... Just like Jesus, Lincoln, and Washington have birthdays and many people celebrate them annually, similarly the Camaro has been recognized that it has a beginning with a 1967 model therefore some recognize that the oldest camaro is now 50 years old.

Somehow it blows my mind... I just now realized that in a few months I will have a car that is half a century old... :noway:

I have read about that. GM officially states that there is no 83 model Corvette. Really do not know why they even did that. They started retail production in Jan 83. They could have just as easily manufactured them as 83 model year. They had to abort the planned 30 year anniversary edition model apparently. What I have read about the Corvette is that they built 44 pre-production cars, but, the quality was so poor they "dismantled" 43 of them, leaving the one that is in the museum. Wonder if it has a VIN. It is funny to read comments from people insisting that their Corvette that was built in 02-83 is an 83 model year Corvette, simply because it was manufactured in 1983.

You ever talk to someone with a CFI car? They were a an idea gone bad. Interestingly the CFI was only used in the F-body for 1982 & 1983, but in 1984 it was dedicated to the Corvette only. There are a few people out there that like them, do not get me wrong, I took an 83 CFI (Camaro) car with what I think was a well built 350 for a drive and that thing just moved.
