3500 SRW : Few Questions

Recommended Posts

So we have received the famous phone call from the dealer telling us they want our '13. Figure it can't hurt to see what they are willing to give for it.

So in pricing both a 2500 and 3500 I see there is now about $1k difference in price. But for the right deal I would still go with a 3500.

While pricing the 3500 out, I see GM now offers two different GVWRs for the truck, a 10k lb and a 10,800lb model. Besides the amount stated on the sticker and the 10k lb model having the side air bags (10.800lb model des not have side air bags), is there any other differences? Is the rear axle the 11.5" for both models? Any other difference? I know there is the possibility (not sure about Mi on personal trucks, never needed to look into it) of differences in regards to insurance and the license plate, just looking for actual differences between the two truck, if there is besides the air bags and a sticker....

The chance that we will trade Bubba J in is very slim, but figure what can a little time to see what they offer hurt?

TY!!!

10,000gvwr has TPMS. Over 10,000gvwr they don't. Also, gross rear axle weight is 6700lbs for the 10,000GVWR, where the 10,800GVWR trucks run 7050RAWR. So, more rear axle capacity with the 10,800. You can still add the side airbags if you choose to the 10,800 truck if you are planning on ordering one.

The 3500 comes with tow mirrors standard. Simply adding those to the 2500 closes most of the price gap. You get another 1,000lbs or more of payload capacity (and upper overload springs) on the 3500. If you will ever need that capacity, go with the 3500. As 15HDriver states, you can still order a 10,800 lb GVWR 3500HD with side airbags. TPMS cannot be ordered on a 10,800 lb GVWR truck. I run massively different tire pressures depending on whether I'm hauling, towing, or running empty, and I've come to appreciate the lack of a TPMS light blinking at me all of the time.

15,

So there is an axle difference then? Wonder if it's the axle itself or springs or..? When pricing the two 3500;s, if I added the side air bags it wanted to change the truck to the 10klb GVWR model. We don't have the side air bags on our '13, though it would be nice.

TY!

Wandern,

TY for the reply. I was aware the difference between the 2500 vs 3500 in regards to the tow mirrors, but TY for mentioning it. Concerning the price difference being closer once the tow mirrors are added, the ~$1k was with the tow mirrors added to the 2500, so it would have been even more of a difference without them on the 2500.

TY for the replies! As I mentioned, chances are the dealer won't be anywhere close to what we would want to make this happen. Only time will tell though.

The Duramax gets the same AAM 11.5 rear axle no matter what, the gasser only gets the AAM 11.5 in the 3500.

No 20in. wheel option on 3500

Overload spring and tow mirrors standard on 3500.

Stiffer torsion bars on 3500

You should be able to order side airbags regardless of GVRW. Use caution if you use seat covers as the best requires special covers for side airbags.

Get the 3500!!!

SMiller I a confused since its conflicting information on the GMC site. They have the front axle capacity on the 3500 CCSB as 4800 lbs, same as the 2500 CCSB both 2016 models. Does the 3500 come with the 6000 lbs front torsion bars? There is a snow prep package on the 3500 which list "Heavy Duty Front Springs"

Thanks for the help!

Wandern,

If you are talking 6.0 2500hd to 6.0 3500hd, the 3500hd uses the 11.5" AAM (same as Duramax) and the 2500hd uses the 10.5" AAM. Axle and the springs combined allow for the higher load carrying capacities. You can add the side bags to trucks over 10K GVWR, there is no limitation to it per the ordering guide.

The 3500HD also has higher rated wheels.

Basically, if you're just going to tow, go with the 2500HD.

If you think you're ever going to want to haul (payload on the truck), go with the 3500HD.

I can go to the local aggregate yard and have 4,000 lbs dumped into the bed of the truck (and stay under my payload rating!). The yard operators inevitably ask me if I've upgraded the suspension, etc. I chuckle, smile, and shake my head.

The 6.0 and 4.10 rear end haul two tons around like it's hardly there.

Just throwing this out there as well, but I went 3500 because all said and done it was $1,000 cheaper then a 2500 exactly the same. Dealer said it was something to do with an advertising fee on the 2500's.

Also if your state is like minnesota My license tabs were $130 compared to a 1500 or 2500 which would have been close to $800 a year. Hell I had to buy tabs for my 07 2500 trade in a month before the new one and they were $180.

The deal didn't happen as I figured. Just wasn't time to replace Bubba J yet.

I was actually wondering if there was a difference between the two 3500 models at all besides a number on the sticker.

The side air bag question was due to the Chevy site not allowing the option on the 10,800lb gvwr truck.

Unless the 2500HD has the 20" option, I believe the wheels are the same. It is only the 20" that are not available on the 3500HD.

TY again to all!!!

Blue2500- I got spoiled by my 2500 so I finally broke down Friday and picked one up .. This baby is a beast and I love it. I'm going to do some mods to it in the next week or so. I can't wait to see how easy this jerks by jayco TH . And yes there's a flint Michigan sticker in the door jamb. I'm glad I made the change regardless.

I agree my 3500 Srw rides considerably rougher then my buddies 2500 of the same year. But it rides much smoother then my Cummins ever did!0d85136b59c48c4d4cadf83e2a24905e.jpg But I don't regret doing it, my insurance and registration is cheaper then his 2500 and the missing tpms is nice since I plan on running over sized off road tires that won't hold 80psi. I did how ever trade rims and tires for a set of OEM 20's. Absolutely love this truck, and yes it has side air bags with the 10,800Gvwr. b0ddd86afe58edcde9e1b314332752dc.jpg

Regardless of website, the 3500 gets stiffer torsion bars, the plow prep ones are very stiff though.
