Fuel pump bad?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I had an issue with my truck a few days ago which I believe is the fuel pump. After starting up normally, I drove it about a quarter mile and it shut off completely. The battery light came on. I tried to start it up, and the battery was definitely not dead. It was cranking at the normal speed. It would start up for a split second and then as soon as it would start it would stall. I pressed the fuel valve on the fuel rail under the hood, which looks similar to a valve stem for a tire, and no fuel came out. I called my mechanic and he said it's a bad fuel pump. However, after waiting 15 minutes, it started up. I drove it for maybe 4-5 min and it was driving completely normally, when it just shut off again. Again, same thing. Battery cranking the engine strong, it would start up and immediately shut off. After a half an hour, it started up again and I continued driving (it ran normally) for another 5 min. Then it shut off. At this point, I was close enough to home to have my dad come pull me home with his 7.3. I have a new fuel pump on the way, but is there anything else it could be? I checked the fuse, everything's good there and I do hear the fuel pump come on, just not every time. Any suggestions? I think the new fuel pump will fix the issue, but if not, what else could it be? I'm just trying to think ahead. Thanks.

Yeah, they are notorious for going out around 150,000 miles. Mine did....almost right on the money. The fuel filter is cheap....and cheap insurance. What fuel pump did you buy? I wouldn't buy anything other than ACDELCO, unless you look forward to replacing it again.

Good ideas. The fuel filter is a 30,000 mile part as far as I know. So, maybe you went 5X its lifespan. Maybe if we would change them at the specified intervals we wouldnt have to replace the fuel pump, emmissions equipment and other stuff.

I heard pulling the bed is the way to go. The previous owner of my LQ4 with 160+ thousand miles said, I think, that he changed it recently before I got it. So, as was said it seems to be a 150k part.

Clean, clean, clean and maybe it wont need doing again whether you still own it or not on down the road.

Be delicate with the parts and wiring as it is probably a sensitive area.

I see you got the factory part.

So, post back afterwards with any problems, solutions or pictures...if you will!

Had the same thing happen to my '98, it was the fuel filter. From my experience (changed the pump on the same truck 2 times) if the pump was bad then you either wouldn't get any fuel or not enough so the truck wouldn't run at all. The first pump went completely out, the 2nd one worked but not enough so it wasn't enough fuel pressure.

As I'm waiting for my pump to come in, decided to paint some stuff. Pump should be here tomorrow. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem. As far as the pressure regulator, I just pull the vacuum line and if any fuel at all comes out of either the regulator or the hose, it's bad? Can the motor be cold or do you do that right after it has been running? Also, does anyone know the part number for an AC Delco fuel pressure regulator? I can't find it

Looks like part ACDELCO 2173073 from Rock Auo is the one you need. If you go to there website put your truck info in and go to fuel/air then go to fuel injector pressure regulator you can find them there. I wold recommend going with a ACDELCO one. There are others there for you to look at/ compare.

So to test the fuel pressure regulator, I pull the breather hose off while it's running and if gas starts leaking out it's bad?

Not while running, it's actually a vacuum hose. You want the truck off, then yes, pull the vacuum hose and if fuel is present you need to replace the regulator.
