Rear Bumper Assembly Installation Help

Recommended Posts

I am trying to install an OEM rear bumper assembly for my GMC Sierra 1500. I have the old bumper off. The new bumper shipped already assembled and I was hoping I could just place the bumper assembly onto the brackets, but I think I am going to have to remove the black tread material from new assembled bumper to remove the new brackets then place the bumper on the brackets. However, I would love to not have to remove the black tread parts to remove the brackets because it is a pain to re-assemble. Has anyone done this on the 2015's with success.

It's been about 18 months since I replaced mine, so I've forgotten most of the specifics. But I hope to god I never have to do that job again. I ended up not completely removing the black plastic tread. I left it in place in the center low part of the bumper and just removed it on the sides and just bent it out of the way to access the bracket bolts. Once installed I painstakingly reattached the black plastic tread and was able to get it back on all points except for the spots in the corners. Access there was next to near impossible.

Loosen the cab side bed bolts. Remove the tailgate end bed bolts. Remove rear wheels. Place jack stands under bed and lower the truck slowly..the bed on the jackstands upon lowering will lift bed just enough to remove- install bumper.
