Chevy has green-lighted the 2017 Silverado High Desert for a fall release. Silverado fans may remember that the concept was first shown at SEMA in 2014. Adding a refined exterior styling, an all-new cargo system that is lockable and water resistant and available Magnetic Ride Control suspension on High Country, the High Desert package will be available on LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels. That's two Highs if you configure it right.

Unlike the GMC Sierra, the Silverado has till now not been offered with magnetic ride control. The High Desert will have a sharp focus on handling with not only the magnetic shocks, but also 20-inch wheels with all-season tires on LT, and tall, 22-inch wheels and all-terrain tires available on LTZ and High Country trim levels.

Chevy's High Desert will feature an all-new flexible, lockable storage system in the cargo bed. The dual side storage bins install over the bed, protecting your tools, and gear from theft and the elements. The High Desert also comes with a three-piece hard tonneau cover and the tailgate locks with the keyfob. An internal cargo divider can be raised to secure smaller items, or lowered to access the full length of the bed floor.

No news on pricing yet, but we will bring that news when it is released closer to fall.

Another random thought...this feature would have been great on the 6ft6 box but I am willing to bet that everything they are using parts wise is from the Avalanche more or less...that means 5ft.8 box which is right around Avalanche sized.

I am going to borrow the shape of that front piece behind the cab.

Weld my own. 100 pounds of "scary" steel.

I like the real avalanche, but that piece is doing something.

You can also buy one direct from GM but it's not quite as heavy (and probably costs more than welding your own):

(scroll down to "Special Ops" and "Realtree" versions).

ADDED IN EDIT:

Found it. It's GM part number 23387668 and costs $995 MSRP (but some online dealers have it for less).

And there is a thread with pictures here:

That's awesome! I love my Avalanche and my K2 Sierra I sold so those two combined will be excellent. I would scoop one of these in a heartbeat!

I had 4 Avalanche's and liked them all. Each iteration a marginal improvement. I hope they offer the rear leveling that the Avalanches had which I understand this was because the Avalanche was from the same chassis as the Tahoe. Would also like the Magnetic Ride control...I think. I haven't experienced it but would be interested. Also, the rear passenger had less room in the Avalanche, so wonder how all of that will fare out.

Summary. Avalanche type Silverado, with 6' bed and same rear passenger room as current Silverado. 6.2L engine, rear leveling and magnetic ride control. LTZ or High Country. Leave the flying buttresses out as well as the collapsible wall between bed and cabin. I never really found a use for that feature.
