2015 Chevy 2500HD Diesel Exhaust Problems

Recommended Posts

I have a 2015 Silverado 2500HD and have been plagued with exhaust problems the last 3 weeks. I drive a lot and have 70,000 miles. DPF has clogged and had it manually regen at dealership for $300. Next day I had DEF system problems and had to have exhaust temp sensor replace for another $400. A week later, I now have a clogged catalytic converter and a bad indirect fuel injector. Dealership wants $2,700 to fix this issue, I put the brakes on this job right away. I bought this $50k truck so I could get a lot of trouble free miles but it seems as if I'm heading down a long expensive highway. Any suggestions? Having the same problems? What to do?

That exhaust system is covered under warranty. GM knows they have exhaust problems on the Diesels or so my service adviser at my dealership told me when I had to have the DEF tank replaced on my 2012 Silverado. Apparently GM extended out the exhaust system warranty because of this. The DPF was fine until they added the DEF system and then the two didn't play well together. Right now I am dealing with my DPF going into regen every 250 miles or so. Should be more like 450-600 like it was on my 2008 Sierra Duramax. They are probably going to take another look at it once i get a few DPF regens done since I had the onboard software updated and the DEF tank replaced a month or so ago. My dealer has been great to work with, wish you were up here in Colorado, I could send you to him. I suggest you contact GM Customer Care and see if they know anything about extended warranty on the exhaust systems for the duramax diesels, explain your situation, get a reference number opened up and all that stuff. Where have you been filling up with fuel at?

Also, let me know if you would like me to provide you my service advisors contact info at my dealership, perhaps he can be helpful to your dealership if they aren't bright enough to figure out the extended warranty issue on the exhaust system.

The power train warranty is 5 years/100,000 miles on my 2012.. I guess the bumper to bumper was 3 YR/36,000. Yes the exhaust system is not covered under the powertrain warranty but again, I was told by my service advisor that GM has extended the warranty on the exhaust systems. Regardless, you shouldn't be having these issues on a 2015 even at 70,000 miles. I have 67,000 miles on my 12. Do you keep up on the fuel filter changes and what not?

Wasnt anything covered under warranty? At least the sensor?

Nothing!! GM Customer care called dealership and they discounted $500 off the $2700 repair they want me to pay for. I called GM and left a message and they haven't called me back in 24 hours. Getting a real sour taste in my mouth over this whole situation!

I called GM Customer Care and talked to a Senior Advisor and she called my dealership. I called the dealership and they offered to take $500 off of the $2700 repair, still not good enough. I called back GM yesterday morning and left a message with the Advisor and hours later I still don't have a reply. Going on 4 weeks now with this problem and getting no where.

Well Anthony, I waited for Sadiyah to contact me back within two business days like she told me and I hadn't heard from her in 3 so I called her and got no where. I was only offered a coupon to purchase a new truck, I have a new truck and it doesn't work! Could you imagine the trade in value on this truck that doesn't run? I've owned countless GM vehicles for the last 25 years and this will be the last one. I guess I'll be contacting the Better Business Bureau and my attorney to see what my next option will be. I'm very disappointed in GM.

I have a 2015 Denali 2500 HD. Two weeks ago on Sunday we started on vacation pulling a 13K RV and got a reduced power warning at 4700 miles. We stopped and called roadside assistance and they told us the truck was covered but we would have to make arrangements to have the RV towed. They were taking the truck some 80 miles out of our route to a dealer. My grandson got on the internet and found that if you shut the truck down, removed the key for two minutes then started it up that you could continue at reduced power. We tried this and was able to get another 200 miles limping the last ten on the shoulder of I-70 at 6mph. Truck was towed to a dealership on Monday morning and they found a sensor and did two regens and sent us on our way. 75 miles later we were again in power reduction so I called the dealer and he said for us to find a campground and they again towed the vehicle to the dealership. They said they cleared all the codes and brought us the truck back. 127 miles later we were at a crawl west of Colorado Springs and could go no farther. It took us about 6 hours to get the camper towed and then we rolled the truck into the ditch and left. We had our camper towed and GM told us that they would take care of everything. Truck was towed to dealership and they could not get the power back so it was towed to Colorado Springs. Now stuck in a motel with grandkids and dogs is quite an experience but the dealership told us that they would not give us a loaner because we didn't buy it from them. We rented a car and made the best of a very bad situation. We have over $6500 in out of pocket expenses including the taxi to Denver airport to rent a car to come home in. GM says they think the truck is fixed and is having it transported to our local dealer. The last time I saw the truck was two weeks tomorrow. I have owned GM products for 50 years and this is the first bad experience I have had but I don't think I can trust this truck one more mile. If anything could go wrong, it did!

Yes. The soot builds up in the exhaust system. The tow truck said he had several in the last two weeks with the same issue. One was a 2016 that had their camper in the same parking lot as ours. They got their truck back and went 30 miles and was down again. GM tells me that they will buy back the truck but then will a 2016 be any better than my 2015? Someone told me that a late built 16 had some changes and GM might have fixed the problem. Mine was built in May 2015. I realize that things go wrong but when you have a vehicle that has a MSRP of $66K, one would think that it should not break down three times in three days for the same reason. This is my first Duramax and I am really impressed with the pulling power and my 6.0 has 194K on it but doubt it would have ruined a vacation like this new one did.

Charlie, hate to hear your vacation troubles due to your truck. What is comes down to is no one thoroughly explains how this exhaust system really works. You can not idle excessively or slow drive too much. You have to let the auto regen complete its cycle or you will ruin the $10k exhaust system. I'm a contractor so guess what I do? Idle longer then usual And I start and stop a lot! My situation fell on deaf ears with GM and was left with no option but to install a delete kit and eliminate my exhaust system completely. Now my truck is a beast! I've increased my horsepower by 150 horses with a little diesel odor and a bit more noise, minimal soot exhaust. I have to have my truck inspected at a "friendly place" and I've basically signed off on my 100k mile power train warranty. But that's ok, I have a truck now that is giving me the max potential out of the Duramax, which can't be beat. I wished GM would have helped me with this issue that they are aware of and have done nothing but make excuses or ignore all together. I've been a loyal GM customer for 30 years and all though I have a sour taste in my mouth, I still enjoy driving my Duramax beast. Good luck to you and they don't help, consider the alternative.
