2016 2500- Whistling noise at idle

Recommended Posts

I have had my 2016 Chevrolet 2500 HD since December and in the last couple months I have noticed a whistling noise coming from the dash area inside the cab when the truck is at idle. When I press lightly on the gas the noise stops. When i took the truck to the dealer for the first oil change i brought it to their attention. They adjusted a pulley and changed the belt. Problem was not fixed. I might add that you cannot hear the sound from outside of the truck, i'm going to take it back in and see if they can correct the issue soon. Anyone else have this issue?

I believe what you're hearing is the hydro booster .. I have a 2016 6.0L 2500.. At idle, it's a whistling, whirling noise.. Can't hear it from the outside, and the noise changes its pitch when turning the wheel left to right.,goes away while driving.. Went to the dealer, and they heard it on 2 other trucks.. So they told me it is normal.. It's quite annoying, but the truck is awesome.. Interior carpet is a little cheap, but they are building really nice trucks lately..

Your description of what I am hearing is spot on. I love the truck but that noise is annoying. When I go in for my next oil change I'm going to have them look at it again to see if there is anything that can be done.

Thanks

Please keep me updated on what they say.If I find out any info, I will certainly share it with you.. we can also try calling GM themselves..maybe they'll get enough complaints to post a bulletin or recall for it. I'm sure the engineers can find a solution.. insulate the noise somehow.. to me, it feels like the noise is traveling up the steering shaft into the column..so if by turning the wheel, the noise changes..the hydro booster works off the power steering pump.. maybe there... good luck with it..

I have 2016 3500 hd that does same thing. It's ridiculous to have to deal with this noise on a 70k truck. Mine started making this noise about a week after I bought new. Had it been present when I test drove I would have walked. I've taken to two different dealers. They agree its not acceptable. They said it was the new retrofitted steering assist they put on the 2016 trucks. 2015 trucks don't have the part therefore are quiet. They replaced mine and made the noise lower but after driving it for a few weeks its really bad again. It's really loud when it gets hot outside too. Must have something to do with fluid viscosity running through the steering assist component. They thought at first it was hydroboost but they disconnected it and the noise didn't change. Dealer said his hands were tied until GM gives him a fix. I called GM. Got no where. Completely unhelpful. Basically told me that if the "Problem Noise" was heard on other trucks then it's going to be considered a normal characteristic of the truck. I was beside myself to say the least. Gotta do better than that GM. I told dealer to try and insulate the part to see if we can masked the noise. No response to that yet. Speaking of insulation....where the hell is it on this truck. I pick up so much road noise it's crazy. I also have a ticking noise radiating from the ds front area. Under load you hear it ticking. Almost like my door is slightly open. At highway speeds it starts to sound like a cd spinning. I've got annoying noises sitting still and driving. I can't win. Traded my 2014 f350 6.7 in on this and I've regretted it everyday. This could be the best truck on the road if they could fix a few problems. I'd start by insulating the damn thing. Look under the hood. Holes everywhere. Nothing is closed off. The firewall has a piece of tin foil on it for insulation. Pretty crappy for a supposed top tier truck. I'll keep you all informed, not if it gets fixed but when and how they fix it. I refuse to let this go until it's right. If anyone else has any helpful info with these problems please share. Thanks!!!

Hey zcostello,

I am deeply sorry to learn that you have multiple concerns with your new truck. Your current experience with this truck is certainly not what GM wants and I would be happy to provide you with some assistance. Please private message me your VIN, mileage, contact information, and the dealer you would like to work with so I may look into this further.

Kindly,

What puzzles me is not a lot of people are complaining about this which leads me to believe mine must be one of the worst ones out there. A friend of mine has a friend up the ladder at GM. He brought up my issue this week with two engineers. They agree they have a problem with the noise associated with the digital assist and they are trying to solve the problem but have had no luck. Until they can solve the problem they are informing everyone that "its normal".

I have had my 2016 Chevy 2500 HD for about 3 weeks now. I heard the noise about 2 weeks after picking it up from the dealer. I took it in last week they had 3 trucks on the lot 2 of the 3 made same noise. So they called me back and said that it is the way it is. Me being irritated by a $50,000 truck sounding horrible. I said that this was unacceptable and that I wanted my money back. The service guy said let me talk to the service manager and see what we can do. They called back and said they have a call into GM design department to see what can be done. About 3 hours later I got a call and the service guy told me that they talked to the engineer from GM design department and he said to change the hydro boost out. When the service guy looked the part number up he noticed that the part number had changed. Which left us both thinking what was wrong with the hydro boost to begin with to change part number. Got my figures crossed. It goes in Monday November 14th 2016. Ill post an update after the work is complete.

Changing the hydro booster will not help. i ordered a new truck and noticed the noise before I actually bought the truck. They called GM and GM recommended changing the booster and the fluid. It made no difference. It's a design flaw with the system. I have a friend at GM who spoke with 2 engineers about your problem. They recognize it as a problem, they are trying to fix it but have had no luck. It's not a safety issue so until they solve the noise problem they are saying "it's normal".

I really wanted the truck but the noise on mine was terribly annoying. What puzzles me is that there are not more people like u complaining about this. Icalled 5-6 different services managers and NONE of them new what I was talking about. I've test drove 4-5 and find the noise in everyone, some louder than others. The one I ordered was the worst. Sorry for the bad news but I think your stuck with the noise. Please keep us in the loop as to your outcome.

PS. I'm guessing the noise was there when you bought the truck it just wasn't to the point were it was noticeable to you. it seems like some get worse with time.
