Collapsed Heater Hose

rutwad

Question

Sorry this isn't a truck, but it is GM. Friend was driving her Cruze to work and gauge or light (not sure) showed car was hot. She stopped, but said the engine definitely wasn't hot. She said the heater hose collapses when cranking her car. What could cause this?

I never thought much about a water pump until she mentioned this. On a side note, when the thermostat is closed what happens as the water pump tries pumping water?

A collapsing coolant hose indicates a restriction - usually a good sized one.

Thermostat simply redirects coolant flow away from the radiator. Once it is opened, coolant flow will start going through radiator. Water pump does not care if thermostat is open or closed. Keep in mind that coolant/water pumps on automotive engines are not really a positive displacement pump. Water pumps behave like a fan in your room.

Don't recall ever seeing heater hoses collapse while cranking the engine over. I would have the cooling system checked out for leaks and maybe even sludged up coolant.
