2500HD & Trailer Brakes Questions

Recommended Posts

When I ordered my 2011, I did not go w/ the Integrated Brake Controller. I installed a Prodigy controller. I see the IBC is available on the current generation truck.

A few questions, for those that have IBC and used it, what are your thoughts, good or bad? How was the set up/calibrating?

I haven't seen anything in the current literature about a "blunt cut harness" (as it was described in the GMT900 info) to install an aftermarket controller.

Planning to order a 2017 later this year.

The IBC works flawlessly for me and being connected to the other systems makes it work even better, with the grade breaking and the exhaust brake.

Another compliment to the IBC system. Works great.

I had the Prodigy on my previous truck, and while it worked fine, it is no where near as good as the IBC. The IBC is just so smooth.

I got to use my IBC for the first time yesterday and was very pleased with how well it works. With the aftermarket controlled I have in the '07 you can adjust gain and rate of onset but once engaged it goes right up to max making it very difficult to make smooth stops. With the IBC the trailer brakes are modulated the same as the truck brakes. Very smooth braking, no herky jerky which keeps my wife much happier.

The wiring is still there for an aftermarket controller if you so choose. My only complaint is that any issue with the ABS, Traction Control, or Stabilitrac will disable your trailer brakes. Otherwise, the system is like a Brake Smart, pressure actuated...the harder you apply the brake pedal, the harder it applies the trailer brakes.

BTDT

The electronics for the transfer case on my '11 started acting up 2 summers ago during a trailer trip. No cruise, traction control or Stabilitrac. Plus the truck went into 'limp' mode. Hardly had any power to move itself. Fortunately my TT is only 21 feet long and my return trip home was only a couple of hours. Thankfully I wasn't on a trip in northern Ontario or in Michigan or Indiana on a race weekend.

What the heck does the transfer case have to do w/ those other systems?

My IBC works perfectly and the biggest positive is that it is not a shin or knee knocker hanging from the dash. Best thing since sliced bread for somebody that has to have a trailer brake controller.

My experience with Prodigy and other aftermarket controllers is that they work best if hung horizontally but to do that they usually get hung low where you can bang your leg on them.

It is a long story as to why, but I pulled the fuse in my truck for the antilock brakes to disable all that crap and my trailer brakes work fine. Just like normal.
