Exhaust system on a 2016 gasser

tooch420

Question

I hope this warrants an answer from a professional. I have 2016 Sierra with 6.0, everything still stock. I have been reading bunch of post from guys just replacing the muffler with a performance one and calling it a day.

First, Will the 6.0 benefit from this change to the system by itself (or just make it sound better) and if so, would it improve even more with opting to go out dual instead of leaving the single stock out. Leaving it all same diameter as originally of coarse.

Thank you, some good info here. Like the fact a dual exhaust will give you top end when in fact these trucks do really need lower end as you stated. Maybe just replacing the muffler will do some good.

As far as doing intake and tuner, I would but there are NONE for 2016 6.0. I have been looking. Just ordered an AEM replacement filter because it was the only performance dry filter i could find, I would have gotten the whole kit if they had one. And I have another posting for this tuner issue.

Mine has a similar sound, but I guess the best way to describe it would be is, if that truck in that vid were 150' away from the camera, that's about what it would sound like. It's similar, but much more muted.

Sounds like that truck there has no cats, too.

Most aftermarket "performance" mufflers are designed to have converters in place. The exhaust in that clip is using the muffler as a resonator only. Way back when they used to call those "Hollywood" mufflers, they have a "blatt" type noise on wide open throttle and crackle on decel. To me they are on pare with the 8 inch exhaust tipped Hondas that are running around. Much like a teacup poodle, all yap, no bite. I am using a Magnaflow split outlet long muffler. It is stainless, as are the tail pipes that were installed. If using stainless pipes, remember to give them a good heavy coat of either a header paint, or high temp clear on all the welds. Also watch the actual pipe, some are welded seam pipes, spray that long weld as well. That will delay any rust from happening. Also, take a magnet to that stainless pipe they are selling, some stainless is not rust proof.

I wasnt looking at Magnaflow just because I have it on my 06' 2500 ext cab and after 5 years it got to me. I want little less drone. My shop did already recommend that.

As far as 3.5", thats just what is on the truck now and was trying to stick with same diameter thats all. That Mag flow system seems like good fit, but I am concerned about drone as mention before. AND, mine looked terrible after few years covered in surface rust.

I went with the long body Magnaflow one inlet, two outlet muffler, no drone. I also did not use Magnaflow's system, just their muffler and two tips, rest was done in custom bent and welded stainless. I think the long body muffler makes the difference in the drone.

Yeah, it usually takes a while for things to become available for the new models. I had a hard time finding all that for my truck when it was new - there was confusion at the time between mine and the Classic model. Had to be really careful when buying parts.

I dont care about the salt we have mild winters and I power wash undercarriage after.

My exhaust shop told me the mufflers they use on my truck was discontinues, so we are looking for alternatives. I'd rather a full custom system from a professional who has done it before as opposed to a kit. I'll see what he comes up with and update.

I have this on my regular cab. Zero drone. Cruising sounds no louder than stock. Excellent when you get on it. Sounds very Corvette with the NPP dual mode exhaust. They don't show it fitting the 2015+up trucks, but all the OEM exhaust is the same 2011-2014 and 2015+ up (nothing under these trucks really changed when they did the frame in 2011). They can sell it to you direct cheaper because they say it doesn't fit. Kind of like a "experimental" discount. Mine fit zero problem.

Every time I do video it ends up over 100GB and can't be uploaded anywhere, so can't help you there.

I found this one, but it's 50x louder than mine. Also have no idea whether I have the "touring" or "sport" exhaust - been 9 years - can't remember.

Probably the touring, since around here the less attention you attract from the revenue generators police, the more money you get to keep for yourself.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I thought i made it clear that sound was secondary to what i am looking for. I do not want a lot if sound especially drone. Tbat is why this time around i am not opting for Magnaflow like i had before. I want little gain in power and quiet cruising sound not to get to me on long trips. I didnt think Corsa was like that, tbat is why i was looking at super 50.

I really wanted advice on doing true dual system or leaving single and changing out muffler.

Magnaflow system gets surface rust ALL over. When you confront them about it they say only warranty if they rust through... so expect them to look like crap after few years... and this is with mild winters not much salting

Like I said - you get what you pay for with exhaust systems. That system WILL outlast the truck, guaranteed. A custom bent one won't, unless they're using stainless, which I highly doubt. The equipment required to bend stainless is HUGE money, and that's incorporated into the cost of the Corsa systems.

For what you get, it's well worth the money. At least up here in MA, replacing an entire system every 3 years for $300 a whack adds up over time to almost the same, not counting your time and effort to hack the old one off and re-install another. I'd have spent $900 by now easily, and the entire system cost a little over $800 back in '07.

That's pretty much what I have on my truck, except duals out the back. Looks identical from the muffler forward. Back when I bought it, there were only Sport & Touring options. They will be different depending on your bed and cab configuration. Crew cab long bed will be much longer than a short bed regular cab, obviously.

I chose the touring just to keep me out of trouble. Too old to be getting harassed anymore. Tired of it. I've paid my dues!

What is part # of the muffler? I want to find sound clip with 6.0

Thanks for the input. But ill wait to see what my shop comes up with. I dont trust everything "should" be same because it never is...lol

Also, it will cost me same if not less to have the whole system custom bent and welded with zero clamps... can't beat that.

I will look into that corsa muffler though. The challenge seems to be finding muffler with 3-1/2" in and 3-1/2" dual out

Just looked up that system... $1,100..!?!? Really!? Its gonna cost me under $800 for cat back dual out any muffler i want.

I threw one of their side-exit exhausts on the neighbor's Silverado. I think it's on it's second year now. No leaks yet. Already beat Flowmaster there.

Just remembered I have pics of my last Flowmaster system on my '94 K1500. This is what it looked like after 3 years. The muffler was no better - both exits rotted right off:

My dual Magnaflow system after 5 years looked terrible. All surface rust and they would not do anything unless it was rotted through. You know how much they cost, and $250 to install a crew cab system to a ext cab truck because they did not make it .

My custom systems seem to last same if not longer. We do not have long winters here in NY and I try keep on top of power washing undercarriage after winters. I would def choose fully welded and custom system over a kit any day.

My biggest decision now is to choose right muffler. The Flowmaster 70 series would give me more low end for towing power, and still be quiet but dont think it comes single in dual out. Does Corsa make a similar muffler? Like you said Jsdirt, I've been there done that with the loud exhaust and I'm too old to deal with it all the time in the cab...lol

Also, I saw here someone mentioned painting the system..which isnt a bad idea, can use high temp black paint would look pretty sick and last.

Can't go wrong with Corsa. You get what you pay for with exhaust systems.

I still have cats on mine (live in MA, so pretty much no choice there without cheating), and it's not really loud at all, even after 84k miles of use.

I would assume an exhaust shop can get any muffler they want...

Only in the same sense that you can get any muffler you want. Corsa does not list just the muffler as a single part. Their warranty covers the system for as long as you own the vehicle, so I guess they do no see the need to sell just one part of the system. They want the second owner to purchase the entire system if parts need replacing. That then gives the new owner an "as long as he owns the vehicle" warranty.

Magnaflow has a single in / dual out 3 inch system, and also a 3.5 in, 3.0 dual out. Why are you after 3.5 in and out?
