Question

my instrument cluster in my 2004 chevy doesnt work. let me break it down. stock instrument cluster. no gauges work. no PRNDL on digital. no odometer. the lights that light up behind instrument cluster work as well as the check engine light and blinkers come on on the instrument cluster. but thats it. wont show icon for when headlights are on or anything else. just what i have stated. checked fuses they are all good but im replacing every single one just to be sure. i tried putting in an instrument cluster from a 2001 gmc suburban but it didnt power up at all. i have ran out of ideas.

The cluster has to be repaired. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can potentially fix it yourself. Most of the issues with the '03+ style clusters, if not stepper motor/ gauge problems, are blank/ dim PRNDL diplay, delayed cluster startup, parasitic battery drain, or inoperative cluster. Most of these issues seemed to be caused by the resistors for power distribution on the circuit board. I've fixed a number of clusters with these issues by resoldering the joints on said resistors. I'm inclined to believe that this is what most of the professional repair services do as well. Vids are on youtube, and a tutorial is on Dieselplace.com as well.
