I have a 1996 chevy k1500 with 236000 miles on the originaly tranny..... lately it has had issues shifting from park. after doing a little research I figured it was the brake safety switch. So I tried to disable only find out that the original owner had already done so.

In trying to get it to shift I accidentally broke the shift mechanism on the column, I got a new one at the salvage yard. I have tried many things including rocking it back and forth and hooking it up to another truck to pull the tension off of my truck and still nothing it will not shift. so I popped the cable off the transmission and the shifter moves fine. which to me means that it has to be something with the transmission. does anyone know how I should deal with it???

it my opinion if I am going to have to have the tranny pulled apart I almost may as well have it rebuilt or have a new one put in it just because of the miles. what do you guys think?

If you are going to keep it this is my 2 cents. I drove the truck for 2.5 years after the trans install.

The 1993 Silverado that I sold needed a trans at 230 k miles. A trans shop here in Colorado would R&R it for about $2 K. They will put in a clutch pack and seals for that price, pumps or other parts will be extra. 12 K miles or 12 months warranty.

I bought a GM Good Wrench trans for $1850, put it in myself. 3 year 36 month warranty. The dealer told me if the trans had a problem they would fix it including removing and replacing it. The difference is they rebuild the trans to new specs.

It shifted great. I know people who have gone with rebuilds from AAMCO or other shops that had less than desirable results.

I think what you might be dealing with is the Shift Interlock. It's a bar connected to a solenoid that will only release when you put your foot on the brake to shift from Park.Look under the dash just to the right of the steering column and you'll see it.My wife's burb had this problem,I just popped it off(ball & socket end)and pushed the rod backwards.Problem solved. She's the only one who drives it so I'm not too worried about it shifting from Park easily.
