Strange how the wheels at GM turn on different issues

Recommended Posts

A few months ago now I saw there was a safety recall on my 2014 Sierra one for the trailer hitch platform and one for the seatbelt cable in the seat. Well just lat week I get 2 different letters letting me know that I need to take my truck in for these issues. Also last week while looking at Yahoo I saw an article on the 2016 Chevy Traverse (my wife's car). It stated that the fuel mileages on the window sticker were not stated correctly and the owners would be receiving either money or an extended warranty for their vehicles. Well last Friday we got a sticker on the door from FedEx saying we had a package that needed to be signed for. That package was delivered today and was the offer for my wife's car of cash or warranty. The FedEx guy said he had quite a few of these to deliver on Friday. So GM can pony up cash offers really fast and easy and just take their sweet time on safety issues? I wonder which one will levy fines quicker the EPA (fuel mileage issue) or the NTSA (my truck)?

it's funny because even with the incorrect MPG numbers, the EPA will still take "points" away from GM for that.

i do agree it seems very odd to me that they are willing to hand out cash or warranty at the drop of a hat, simply because of a MPG misprint. Yet, when people have serious safety concerns, they doddle along with it, take their time, and never mention anything about cash or extended warranty.

My guess is they got some serious pressure from the EPA, or, this is GM's way of being the good guys in the public eye. They write a few bank notes, extend a few warranties, look good to the world, more people buy GM vehicles, and they make the money back 10 fold through future sales.

The safety issue like the seat belt which I'm on the list to get fix takes time from what the dealership told me. They said they are waiting for the parts to come in. You have to assume they have to figure out the issue, figure out how to fix it, order the parts and ship the parts to the dealerships. That takes time to do. Cutting a check not so much.

You are correct it's easy to just cut a check. My issue is the time it took for them to inform me of the problem. I read about the hitch and seatbelt issue on here a few months ago it seems. They just sent a recall notice last week? The issue with my wifes car was in the news last week because I sent her a link and told her she may want to check on it. Then they send an offer overnight delivery. Yes the parts are needed to make the recall repairs but, a simple warning letter sent when the problem was discovered should not take months to reach the registered owner should it? It's the same as printing a check right?

Different shops. One shop is safety and the other is finance, a lot of times different shops are not on the same page.

All I'm saying in my original post is that a Safety item notice should not take this long to notify the customer. I could care less about different departments.

60 years ago if seat belts were installed on a car, the mfg worried that it may scare away buyers with the perception being that the vehicle may be dangerous.

20 years ago I doubt either the safety recalls nor the misprinted mpg would have been addressed by any mfg.

Rest assure, things are moving in the right direction. Though there are still other co's that refuse to recall anything.

GM has the ntsa hanging out full time at hq for at least another year.
