towing with a leveled truck

Recommended Posts

I thought I’d put up a post about towing with a leveled truck and larger tires. It’s a question that’s been asked before, and when I asked about towing with the tires I have, I got no real answer.

I’ll give the details of what I have:

2015 Sierra 2500 hd CC 6.0 L 4.10:1 gears

2” level up front with stock keys, alignment after lift.

Air bags in the rear

35- 12.50/18 BFG mud terrain tires

Factory 18” wheels

Trailer:

2014 Pumma toy hauler 30 THSS

35’ long

1145 lbs hitch weight

10879 GVWR

Here is the unit together:

Here are the scale weights, keep in mind they are in KG’s

Front axle 3306 lbs

8708 lbs TruckIMG_20160531_135905_zpsehnntgs5.jpg

Rear axle 5401 lbsIMG_20160531_140026_zpshkcma92f.jpg

Trailer 7848 lbsIMG_20160531_140206_zpsjl8w7vxt.jpg

This was with 100 gal of water and all the food and clothes for a weekend. 60 psi in the truck tires,65 psi trailer tires, 40 psi in the bags with the trailer hooked up. Over all im really happy with the set up. I didn’t notice any appreciable loss of power with the taller tires, or extra fuel consumption. This was on a route that had hills and speeds up to 110 kph ( 70 mph). I have a weight distribution hitch with a friction sway control that is a little light for the application, and will be replacing it with a Curt straight bar unit with the appropriate rating. I was concerned about the tires being of a D rating seeing as the stockers were E rated, but they proved to be well up to the task. Im supper happy with the tire choice.

So to answer the question “ can I tow with the truck leveled and with bigger tires?” in my experience id say absolutely

The pictures make it look like the trailer nose is a little high. Maybe you want to drop it down one slot?

I was playing around with the air bag pressure, and it was at 50 psi in those pictures. It's down level at 40 psi

Very nice rig!

Not that I'd be concerned whatsoever with your setup but some people throw airbags in blindly...then forget to set up the hitch accordingly to ensure the front truck axle has weight shifted back onto it air bags cause a pivot point regardless of how much psi is in them.

For reference...I use air bags on my 1500

Thanks for the compliments Matt, and I agree totally on setting up a hitch properly. I spent the better part of a day at that same scales doing that. I added the bags to add some stability to the truck. This is the first truck that I've had them on, and I'm liking them
