Washer and dryer advice

Recommended Posts

I'm moving back to New Hampshire at the end of the month and the new place has hookups for laundry machines. What brands do you folks have? Happy with it?

Looking mostly at top loaders due to cost. Don't need one of the giant ones as it's just me so loads won't be huge.

After our experience with front loaders, I can say my wife and I prefer top loader washers. Top loaders wash better, do it in about half or a third the time and cost less. They do use more water, but they do everything else better. Dryers? gas for sure.

I think most of the U.S. brands are made by only a couple manufacturers.

Get the largest size in the common brands. You never know when you need to wash a bedspread, quilt for the dog, whatever.

I'm looking at top loaders. Unfortunately the apartment is only set up for an electric dryer but I had good luck with the electric in the place I had in NH before moving and that was a cheap as they come, off the sales floor at Sears Whirlpool. Whirlpool makes their stuff, Maytag and Amana too. I've been picking the brain of a friend out here who owns his own appliance shop and he recommended Speed Queen but those are considerably more expensive, but they'll last forever. I could probably swing the cost but it's a question of if I really need an ultra rugged set when I live alone. I'm hoping the stores have some kind of sales for the 4th of July as that's when I'll be buying.

Yes the gimmick of front loaders is over. Sad to say that while they are energy efficiant and save water, personnaly I don't think they do a great job washing. Bottom line is you need some water and the old style top loaders do a way better job because they use more water!

Since i have been a home owner I have always bought Kenmore washers and dryers. I think they are actually made by Whirlpool!

Whirlpool all the way. Actually headed to lowes today to buy a whirlpool cabrio. I have a may tag bravo 850 that my wife I paid just shy of a 1000 bucks 4 years ago and the bearings went out. Don't buy May tag or Samsung. Appliance repair guy told me whirlpool is the way to go.

Whirlpool owns and makes Maytag. They also make Kenmore, some Kitchen-aid and many other brands. When you buy certain parts, they are listed as fitting this whirlpool or that Maytag,Kenmore, etc..

That's my understanding too. Bravos and Cabrio are basically the same machine inside.

I have a Maytag washer/dryer and my last one before that was the same. Very happy with them.

You will get many opinions like all questions IMO.

Buy what you like and can afford.

This is just like any other purchase, still an assembly line, mass produced item. :happysad:
