Gm-trucks paint chip repair guide?

Recommended Posts

So the razor thin paint that is on these 2014/16 trucks, is it easy to repair?

I don't seem to think there is much of a clear coat either. I have a pea sized CHIP on my door and several around the wheel wells with only 10k miles. Hand washed never car washed. I guess I'm hoping to learn how to touch up paint. I have the emerald green paint. It was a special color option. And the paint chip sticks out cause it's white underneath.

Love the color, but I don't see the paints beauty lasting at this rate. Any tips or products that I can use for paint chips and scratches? Gm offer a touch up kit?

Im tired of bitching an moaning and want to just do something about.

Would love to hear some suggestions or links to "how to" videos on the subject.

Best place I know of to get touch-up kits: https://touchupdirect.com/

They're the only place I could find the paint for my truck too.

In terms of fixing the chips, I recommend the AMMO NYC YouTube channel, especially this video:

They have a bunch of great videos on all things vehicle care.

+1 for Dr. Colorchip !!

I have the Emerald Green paint as well and had my doubts that Dr. Colorchip would work. I decided to give it a try and ordered it and you wouldn't believe how good this stuff is. It is a little expensive but it really does work. I've touched up a bunch of spots since Nov 2015 and it does a pretty good job of blending them in!

Agreed on Dr. Colorchip. I used it on a 10 year old black car that had a lot of chips in the paint and it did wonders.

I used THIS. Great color match.

I don't like the current generation of paints being used either. My last 2 cars (2011 VW GTi and 2013 VW Passat) were terrible paint-wise. They all use the environmentally friendly water-based paints now, and none of them are worth a damn. It is better for the atmosphere though, so there is that... :fart:

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a black 2016 Silverado that is only 10 weeks old and has 4000 miles on it. It already has a few rock chips on the front bumper and grill. The paint and clearcoat on this trucks must be super thin. Today I noticed more chips and cluster of weird scratches below the clear coat into the primer on the fender about halfway between the hood line and wheel well. I have no idea how these scratches got there or where they came from. Looks like someone leaned against it with keys on their belt or something. ( the truck sleeps outside in the elements) The chips in the front are from road rash I assume. I washed and clayed the whole truck 2 weeks after I brought it home new and would of done it sooner but we were in a rain pattern for the 2 weeks, and then waxed it heavily with meguires ultimate paste wax. I always use a 2 bucket wash with grit guards and always dry with a leaf blower. And I never touch it when it's been in the sun, and only wash it early in the morning in the shade, and before it gets hot. Today I spent 7 hours washing it and clayed all my horizontal surfaces for a 2cd time. ( this is about my 5th wash) And applied more of the same wax. Of coarse it's pouring down rain now 3 hours after I finished.... Lmao!! Never fails!! I think it's pretty pitiful that the paint is having issues with only 4 k miles. I came here looking for some ideas on some products to remedy some of the scratches and chips in the paint. And found some ideas worth researching. Thanks guys.

I had Dr Chip Repair come to my house, using Dr. Colorchip he worked over 2 hours and covered chips and scratches on my 96 Corvette. For me the chips stood out because of the black base but if you look closely the craters are still there, just nowhere near as noticeable. Best $85 I spent.
