New Studies Show That A Majority Of Americans Support Self-Driving Cars.

Bloomberg News (6/30, Naughton) reports that in a recent study by AlixPartners found that “almost three-quarters of US drivers are eager to replace the daily commute’s drudgery with a self-driving car and 80 percent say they would pay extra to have a robot take the wheel,” The study surveyed 1,517 people who had been presented with the attributes of self driving cars. In an interview the head of AlixPartners automotive practice, Mark Wakefield said, “Autonomous driving increases the economic utility of the commuter and it makes their life better. When you describe what it can do, they like that.” These survey results are contradictory to several other studies recently conducted, which showed that “as many as half to three-quarters of respondents weren’t ready to give up the wheel.” Wakefield speculated that previous studies may have produced biased against self-driving cars by presenting worst-case scenarios. What AlixPartners found was that the people surveyed want autonomous vehicles and were particularly favorable of having override options and the ability to take back control of the wheel.

ComputerWorld (6/29, Mearian) reports that according to a new survey by Volvo, “A majority of Americans support autonomous driving, but 72% of believe that the act of driving is a luxury that must be preserved.” The survey also found that many Americans are concerned by how slowly policymakers are approaching the topic of autonomous cars.

I think that the car makers are going to far ahead of them self.

They still haven't mastered the existing technologies.

Faulty airbags (recently Honda), rusting frames, clunky transmissions, flaking paint, oil burning engines, just to name a few.

But at the end we're the ones to blame. We as the car buyers are asking for this crap.

so long

My stance has changed, last year I was going blind (Fuchs dystrophy) so suddenly self driving vehicles seamed like a good idea. Surgery and an organ donor helped me for now but if something were to change again I would like to have that option. I enjoy driving so unless I need it I don't want to be forced into it, but I do see it as a valuable tool for some.

I would not want to be in a self driving vehicle unless ALL the vehicles around me were also self-driving.

But I have too much fun driving, the only time I would want it is for the 5.5 hour trip to the in-law's. Then I could take a nap.

I wanted a better representation, I am sure not many truck owners were in the sample population

You will have to pry my cold, dead, hands off the wheel of my vehicle. There is a reason businesses have IT directors, computers and programs have problems. The last thing I want is a computer to crash on me doing 80 mph on the interstate. I know I'm not a perfect driver, but as an American I deserve the right to drive my own vehicles.

a volvo survey indeed.

72% of all surveyed need to preserve driving as a luxury, while the "other majority" vote for autonomous.

:bs:

that is the same company claming to have 2800 foot pounds slamming a tractor trailer driveshaft with an I-6.

meanwhile in america, a prehistoric scania v8 in a 1986 mack is owning 90% of all truck pulls.

the "other majority" claims it is volvo doing the winning.

:bs:

hold my volvo , watch this..

I'm really curious who would be at fault if the computer freaks out and causes an accident. Software company? car manufacturers? Would they put in a disclaimer putting the responsibility on the consumer?

I can see more and more cases stemming from accidents ending up in the courts if autonomous cars become common.

I am sure that some don't support self driving cars, like the owner of a Tesla that was using the autonomous driving feature of the Tesla and his car did a full gainer in the side of a semi truck and he was killed.
