1886 GMC 1500 ignition module getting hot

Question

I have a 1986 GMC 1500 that is showing a 42 code We have replaced ignition module the ignition timing module and the distributor. after taking the truck up the block and coming back the truck sputters and shuts down any thoughts of what this could do would be helpful

I normally don't even look at codes on OBD-I vehicles. 90% of the time they're not really helpful in diagnosing drivability issues.

 

Double check that all your wiring is connected correctly. Make sure a ground wasn't left loose if it attaches to the base of the distributor. Make sure you've got battery voltage, key on, on the appropriate wire, and a good ground in the harness as well.

 

These days there's also a good chance of something being junk right out of the box. If all else fails, that would be my suspicion. Sometimes it's tough to return electronic parts - depends on the retailer. Most won't, since it's so easy to turn the components into paperweights by hooking them up wrong.
