2500HD vs 1500 Which to own?

Recommended Posts

I bought my 02 Chevy 2500HD about a month back for $3000 with a rebuilt title. It seems to be fine surprisingly enough. It runs great and shifts really well. Still has lots of power. But there are a bunch of little things that I'm starting to notice that could never be fixed. The doors don't sit straight, the frame was straightened but stuff like that doesn't sit where it should. Its been a good truck but it definitely is a bit too much truck. I found a guy on Craigslist that has an 04 1500 and he needs a bigger truck for his job. So win win right? But is it worth it? My truck seems to be fine but its too much and the gas mileage is killing me. So is trading worth the risk of ending up with a truck that might be a money pit?

I would also say that it depends on what you plan on doing with the truck. If you don't haul or tow anything very often, then a 1500 might be a better fit. But if you need a truck to do any heavy hauling or towing, then the 2500 is definitely a better choice. I think we need a little more information from you before we can really give you a lot of input.

Have a great day,

Jake

What's the mileage condition on the 1500? For the money you paid for the 2500 you might be better off keeping it as it's got a better trans and stronger motor. 1500 has a weak 4L60 and it might get 2 to 4 MPG better.

Life is too short to drive a little truck. Won't you always have that nagging voice telling you that you traded it for a women's pickup..? Hopefully it isn't your wife's voice. I was referring to the little dev.. Angel on your shoulder. But really, like Jake said, it depends. It's probably been pooping wheelies all over town with a couple pallets too many of "who knows what" on it. 2 years newer but you don't get better components you get lesser ones that have been used far beyond their recommended capacity. Let me tell you, the work a 2500hd can do compared to a 1/2 ton makes the Silverado look like an old datsun. I put 2 full pallets of tile, all of my tools and another half ton or so in thinset and deck mud and she sits level and pretty. And drives like a dream with the 6.0 and some weight in it. How they're meant to be driven.

The only time a truck should be lowered is when you put shit in it.. !?#$¿¢ Insert 6 letter expletive that starts with an f and ends in aggot. Lol

Not calling you that raptordude, of course.. Just a saying I came up with whenst glancing over the ocean of maids and office workers that used to clog my daily commute.

That's true, my 2500HD with the 6.0 almost drives better loaded and towing a little trailer than unloaded. They're made to work

I keep about 250 lbs in my bed for work and the truck has a much better ride and handling - IMHO

You sir are inspiring. Great decision. And you'll never regret it. When/if you get a chance drive an 08 or newer 2500hd 6.0. I'll upgrade to a newer model eventually but this truck made me a 2500hd driver for life. With the 6spd auto and probably damn near 3 tons empty it puts all the power down and the torque is available where the hp isn't (1500rpm ^) so it makes it a blast to drive. Pissin on jap cars all day! You'll pull several car lengths on a stock g35 in under an 1/8th mile. I'm not a mean guy buy I do revel in their post race depression. It's like, wow! My vehicle is fast AND it makes me money. I used to be into fast cars but the thought of driving a little ricer coupe on say for example, a first date... Embarrassed is the best one word descriptor for how I'd feel... once you feel that 6 spd tyranny working it's magic, it'll be on your wishlist.

Love my 11' 2500Hd 6.0. Had an 02' 1500 and an 07' 1500. Never go back to the days of the 1500. The HD feels more in control of the road and can handle more weight, a lot better. All around it all depends what you're using the truck for. No one else can spend your money.

My dad has a 2013 1500 with the 4.8L in it. I really don't like it at all. They're so wide compared to the 99-06 body style. Plus with the baby V8 it has no get up and go. Granted my 2500HD doesn't have much more get up and go but it's also a 6200 lbs truck. Probably doesn't help that I drive like a granny to help with gas mileage lol. But it's got a lot more power behind it which is awesome. Since I'm done working in the fields for this year I really don't need a 2500 but I decided a 1500 just isn't worth it. Especially since I'd still have to stay within the $4-5000 range. I think I've got one of the nicest trucks in that price range that I've seen. No engine lights, abs works, motor only uses 1 quart every 5000 miles which isn't too uncommon, transmission shifts strong, transfer case seems to work great and Ive never had issues with the 4x4, and the underside is clean. Plus the better transmission and transfer case on the 2500HDs should last well beyond the day when the cab finally rusts away
