Totaled (?) 2015 Yukon XL returning from vacation

Recommended Posts

Our family was returning home from Michigan to Maryland this weekend in our ’15 Yukon XL. On I-80 in Ohio we hit a radical storm cell, with torrential rain. I slowed the vehicle in the left lane, placed my hazards on and was actively calculating our next steps when we hydroplaned. Stabilitrak activated and I did my best to steer us out of the hydroplane, however I was unsuccessful. The car fishtailed at 50mph into a concrete wall, where the front end made contact. The back of the vehicle swung into the wall, and the entire car ejected back into the left lane of traffic. Fortunately there was no oncoming traffic in that lane. The airbags deployed and OnStar immediately engaged with us, notifying first responders. Our family of six including four children under 8 walked away from the accident. The kids didn’t have a scratch on them. My wife and I are bruised up and I have burns on my hand from the airbag deployment. This post is a strong endorsement to the safety of the GMC/Suburban. The car very likely saved our lives and OnStar took all the “work” out of managing the accident. They walked us through all of the right questions to ask the kids, what to do with the vehicle and coordinated first responders. Rain was so heavy that the fire department passed our vehicle on the interstate, before turning around and looking for us a second time. We are beyond thankful that the accident didn’t result in injury - it could have gone 50 ways sideways.

A question - has anybody had a similar accident and if so, was the car deemed totaled by insurance? We will know tomorrow. I’ll buy another one this week if that’s the case.

Glad your family is OK. We have sudden downpours here in Florida normally, and have learned you cannot skimp on tires here. Our Denali came with Bridgestones. I quickly learned after two scares that they were pretty bad in the wet. We recently got michelins defenders as a replacement which are superior in the rain. What tires did you have??

Congrats on buying a truck instead of a car. That thing protected you well.

A car is totalled when the repairs + the salvage value equal 80% of the ACV (before the accident). That Yukon will probably be fixed.

Just thought I'd update this thread - AllState formally totaled the car after back/forth. The damage in the photos is representative of approximately 30,000 in damage. The accident occurred in Ohio where cost of repair + salvage value has to exceed the market value of the car, which it did.

I'm inquiring about the tires, and tread wear. A few folks have asked about tires. We had 41,035 mi on car, with new tires on the back.

We purchased a 2016 Yukon XL with the same configuration, and we're truckin' again.

Thanks for the update! I guess you agree it kept you safe w/ your new purchase decision. Good for you, best of luck. Let us know the brand of those tires. Thanks
