Question on Greasing Axels

Recommended Posts

First time trailer owner. 6 X 10 car mate single axel utility trailer. It has a Dexter EZ lube axel. The dealer told me I should put two squirts of grease each in month. He said anything more risks blowing out the seal. Online many videos, including those from dexter axel instruct you to keep pumping new grease in until you see you have flushed out all the old grease. I mentioned the videos to the dealer he said he had no idea what they were doing. Can you please help me with this ? Not sure if I should be flushing out all the old grease or just putting in a few squirts each month

Here is a video from dexter

Too much pops the seals and you end up either leaking it out all over or if it has brakes it covers the shoes. Little is more sometimes. If you jack the wheel up and follow their procedure it may work but I had those on my trailer and grease still pushed passed the seals and soaked the brakes. Up to you.

1994vmax pretty much sums that up, Ive got dexter easy lube on 2 different tandem trailers but honestly I would just repack the bearing by hand. You cant totally trust that grease is getting to every it needs to. On mine it does go all the way back to inner bearing but I just feel better doing it myself. I do think there a good step in the right direction for keeping some grease in there between packing.

I jack mine up and check the wheel for play and noise every year and repack every second year. I don't add in between. If something doesn't feel right on the non repack years, it comes apart.

I do push grease in on my boat trailer though.
