From Ford F-150 to GM truck?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, after 8 Fords I recently bought my first GM truck. I had been checking out the 2016 Silverado LTZs for about 6 months. I had owned my last F150 for 10 years and loved it, but I really like the way the new GM trucks looked. The 20% off deal that GM recently offered convinced me to go for it! I ended up with a 2016 GMC Sierra SLT because the Silverado LTZ was not included in the 20% incentive. After checking out the GMC I actually liked the styling better than the Chevy, so it worked out great for me. So far I really like this truck a lot and I get looks and compliments all the time! I am just curious to know how many long time Ford owners have bought GM trucks and how do you like it compared to Ford?

OP - Congrats on the new truck! Looks great! I owned 1 Ford many years ago - a '71 2WD pickup with a 302 V8 & 3sp on the tree. It was a good truck.

I think some trucks are very trouble prone and some owners look for trouble. Here's to many happy, trouble-free tears to you and your new GMC.

I traded in my first truck (2006 Ford F-150 Supercrew XLT 4x2) for my current truck (2016 GMC Sierra Denali Crewcab 4x4) in May of this year. My Dad always owned GMC previously and that is what I was looking at initially back in 2006 but found a much better deal on the Ford so I wound up being the wayward son who was not GM loyal. This time around I could get a better deal on the GMC so I came back into the fold.

No complaints about my F150 as far as quality, in the ten years I had it I put no money into it other than routine maintenance. However, I regretted not getting 4x4 and the 4.6L/4 speed auto combo was painfully slow. The Denali with the 6.2L is a nice upgrade and all the technology advancement over those 10 years has made for a much nicer and more comfortable ride. Hopefully the quality is there on this truck like my F-150 was.

I owned many Ford trucks...

'91 F150

'99 F250

'01 F150

'03 F250SD

In '07, I was looking again, and, was considering an F250SD again. That was right around the time when the 250s went "Tonka" with their looks. All of my Ford's were good trucks. The '91 F150 gave me 160,000 problem free miles. Only thing I remember doing to it was a new starter, along with routine wear and tear stuff like tires, batteries, stuff like that. I mean, what more could one ask? Didn't burn a drop of oil at 160,000 miles.

On a whim, stopped by a GMC dealer and looked at an '07 Sierra (new body style as it was called then) and never looked back. In '07 you could still get the '07 Sierra "classic" which was the previous generation body style.

I know there is probably more parity today, but, IMO, Ford, back in that time frame ('07), was behind the 8-ball for a short time on infotainment and interior amenities relative to GM. I like that stuff, so made the choice easier.

It's also no secret that GM (IMO has always had, and still does) a big edge on Engine management. With the modular V8s, ford had committed to OHC engines. Not a big deal really, but harder to eek economy out of them. From a fuel economy and performance standpoint, I always thought the GM 5.3 had the Ford 5.4 beat significantly. Of course, GM had them beat badly on fuel economy.

All in all, I find it hard to criticize the Fords I had. They were good. My last Ford had quite a few irritating quality issues on interior fitments that had left a little sour taste in my mouth, but that could have just been the one I had. I am sure GM spits out a few trucks that aren't to par with others of the same run.

My '07 Sierra gave me problem free 125,000 miles, and was still running strong when I sold it to one of my work buddies. It was certainly good enough for me to get the '16 Sierra I have today. The '16 GMC is light years ahead of the '07 GMC. Overall, I am very pleased with it so far.

Just my $0.05.

I've had 3 fords in the past. First was my first vehicle an 81 F100 with 300 inline 6 which I still say was one of the best motors made. Was a bit of a gas hog with a 3 spd manual but had tons of low end torque. I finally got rid of it after it rolled over 389k miles! Second was a 99 F350 4wd v10 5 spd, thing was a tank lol. Pulled many cars n trucks out of the ditches with it. Only downside with it was the rough ride and the 12 mpg. Third was a 2008 2wd ranger 4 cylinder 5 spd which road like a one ton lol. Got rid of that after I snapped a telephone pole in half. So far I'm loving my 2016 GMC SLT. I'm averaging about 18.2 mpg so far after 11k miles. Not too shabby for a 420 hp 4wd crew cab. My biggest complaints are not being able to turn off tc/stabilitrak permanently and not being able to set up the moonroof to close automatically when you turn the truck off. Maybe hopefully the next gen will offer those things.

From 91-99 I drove dodge diesels then ford deisels. The wife drove ford cars. From 01- present I drove gmc trucks my wife Hyundai from the dealer across the street. I switch because of a bad dealer not bad vehicles. The only camplaint I had with my last gas ford truck was performance, and a vortex s/c fix that. My dads 98 dodge deisel and moms 00 ford 7.3 are driven daily by them and they refuse to up grade, still trouble free.

Actually this picture was taken the night I bought the truck, at that point I had not even driven the truck. It was after the dealership had closed and they did a quick cleanup and parked it there. I snapped the picture just before I got in the truck to leave. I took the truck back the following Monday for a complete cleanup. But to your point I do have to scope out just the right parking space to make sure that I can get in it and try to avoid parking where it looks like other may hit my truck with their doors.

Might as well forget about parking it so nobody hits it with their door. There will always be someone to park right next to it that doesn't care if they ding your door or not. you already have the wide step bars and looks like door trim so you shouldn't have a big problem with that.
