When GM announced it would soon sell its midsize trucks with Duramax diesels a couple years back, fans were overjoyed. Even Tacoma fans began to look in the direction of the GM Colorado and Canyon twins. We have the numbers now and the take-rate for the Duamax diesel is higher than GM expected it would be.

We asked GM a while back what percentage the guess was for diesel Colorados and Canyons. Back then, the best estimate was about 5%. Keep in mind that GM cannot keep up with the demand for these trucks, so we don't have a buyer's market to really gauge what the results would be if customers could pick and choose. Inventory is short, and who knows what GM could sell if it wasn't.

GM surprised us today by being completely open about its sales numbers. Most auto makers pretend stuff like that is as secret as the Coke formula. In July, GM sold 679 diesel Colorados. Therefore the percentage is 7.4% (GM's math). The Canyon was higher by percentage at 9.8% and 347 Canyons with the Duramax overall.

So given these facts was it worth it? To fans and owners the answer is a definite "YES!" To bean counters who know the cost in dollars and engineering time to certify an engine to sell a thousand per month, the answer would likely be "no." However, then there is the prestige and product branding to consider. It makes Tacoma fans crazy that they can't have a diesel. That alone has a value.

In a past story we asked you to predict the sales - Great job SnakeEyes!

The take rate would be a lot higher if the baby Duramax was priced appropriate to the cost of build, rather than the crazy marketing number that someone pulled out of their butt.

If it was a $1500 to $2000 option, the take rate would easily exceed 25%

Drop this in the base truck, no gadgets, single cab long bed, give me a/c, PW, PL, and an auto, and I'd give $22k and my '92 Toyota pickup for the deal. Take rate may be 30-40%. And I'm still dreaming...

That's the issue that I don't understand, you have to buy it loaded to get the dmax, just like having to buy a loaded 1500 crew to get the 6.2. Engine choices should not be linked to trim levels.

Wake up GM and stop that insanity.

the only little diesel I ever drove was nissan extended cab, real old.. 4 square headlights. Snuck in from canada I presume.

overseas there is a nickname for them . Crazy longevity.

the electrical circuit was so small, he ran long grounds just to get a loop for headlights etc.

I ponder gm went full trim to keep a normal sized system on the diesel.

Spark plugs and ignition is more than half of a 100 amp circuit on gas engines. A funny thought.. going full trim on diesel, no reason.

today I know it is all electrons..but it reminded me of the most basic japanese truck ever...and it had no plugs tugging at the 50 amp alternator.

Wow. Just paid $52k for my crew cab, z71, 4x4, Silverado 2500, w/ leather and nav. Good luck selling a Colorado for $41k. Prices can be so crazy today. Same reason no ones seeing the Chevy SS sedan out on the road. Stock them with a manual for $35k and I'd have one in the garage. But no, they're all loaded up automatic's for $55k. No thanks!

Iv bought most big GM SS when they come out with a new model. The last was the 94 Impala kept it 7 years had a camaro at the same time, kept it longer. Just can't pay the 55K they wanted for the new one. Just didn't seem worth it, getting old I guess.

94-96 Impala SS/94-96 Caprice 9C1 Police Package 5.7L.. LT1 derived V8.. 260 HP- lots of fun back in the day. I came close to purchasing a 95 SS. Got to drive plenty of 94-96 9C1s when I worked in the fleet at the local Sheriff's Department.. <sigh> Those were the good days. Then I got old.

I couldn't agree MORE. I mean with Chrysler/RAM/JEEP putting theirs at $4500 and Chevy gets what... $4400?

I ran the math last year on it (in the RAM) and considering the higher cost of fuel, better mileage, higher overall vehicle cost, and it came out to FOURTY YEARS+ that you'd have to own the thing driving 15,000 miles a year to even break even. And THAT didn't include DEF, higher priced oil changes and the associated costs with that.

Of course you can tow more, but pffffft like that matters.

At $41K it's a bargain. LOL

But seriously... before we ordered ours (the Silverado LTZ of course) we test drove a LTZ 4x4 with Cocoa/Dune, orange metallic and the 2.8. My wife LOVED IT! But it was over $44K!!! I just couldn't even CONSIDER it when a $59K plus Silverado can be bought at $50,400 (and then get another $1000 Costco Cash Card)..... knowing that if you're LUCKY you can be so blessed to get $1500 off the Canyon.

Nope... me thinks not.

Can't say we don't like the drive/ride of them though. Actually.... my wife's Nissan has been back at Hennessy for a month now (they are trying the third time to get rid of popping in the front steering after a crash repair in Feb) and they've given her a Canyon to drive. (Actually, the first time it was in the shop she had an Acadia for a month. Then second time it was a Yukon for 3 weeks. Then now it's been a stripped down Canyon.) She really loves the way the little truck drives. Were it not for it getting only 20~21mpg I'm afraid she might want to buy one. (To go with the Silverado of course.) Just that right now... I'm showing 20.4mpg on mine, with a couple trips to the north side of Atlanta on it this week. Hard to make the math work for the little one when the big one (and her loaner is a 2wd where mine is a 4x4) gets such good mileage.

Of course we're talking about the baby Duramax here, which would certainly help on the mileage front, but like I said above... fourty years plus to payback is a bit of a stretch.

Now that big Duramax however.... can't say I wouldn't like to have one of those (with a tune) in a SRW 4x4 and just embarrass the snot out of Mustangs and Camaros at red lights. LOL
