Factory fill oil?

Was at the local dealer today picking up a tailgate lock/bezel kit and a UPF48R oil filter, noticed a poster saying GM recommends Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

 

Did they change the factory fill from Mobil?

 

I bought some QS Ultimate a couple of weeks back, gonna give it a try.

I used to use Quaker State, but sometimes after I shut the engine off I could sometimes hear the oil start to drip into the pan. I heard QS was the only one that does this. I switched to Mobil and I'm glad I did. My 2 year maintenance was up this past April so I get to do the oil changes myself again and I plan on using Mobil 1 oil and filters.

Are those M1 filters good quality?

They seem to be. When I used QS I used Fram filters and once I saw a vid of someone cutting a few different brands up that's when I changed to Mobil 1 and figured since I was changing that I'll change oil too. Most oil filters no matter the brand seemed to have cardboard which doesn't make sense to me. Mobil 1 and a couple other high quality filters didn't from what I can remember.

I ran a Fram Ultra filter and got a UOA done by Blackstone. The results were excellent. The Fram Premium line is one of the best on the market.

I either run Fram or UPF48R.

I think I read the Fram Premium or whatever is the highest one is the only one that they don't put cardboard in.

Factory fill is GM ACDelco Dexos semi synthetic 5w30 for 2011 and newer vehicles that use 5w30. AC Delco Dexos oil (ACDelco does brand it as Dexos 1) is made by Mobil. That Quaker State bit sounds like a dealership endorsement of sorts, or that dealer purchases bulk Quaker State oil from another source other than the GM Oil Program for dealers. Other than the Mobil 1 recommendation for cars that called for it, GM has either pushed Goodwrench oils or ACDelco oils.

 

As long as it meets Dexos spec for 2011 and newer (any licensed oil will have the Dexos label right on the bottle) then you are fine.

It is listed in the Duramax manual to run 5W40 when temps are below 0F.

Just run a Dexos approved oil and a good quality filter and don't give anymore thought into it. If you are worried, have an oil analysis done to give you some peace of mind. People loose way too much sleep over oil. Follow the owners manual recommendations on viscosity and call it good.

I am not brand loyal to oil, have tried a few brands. There are some that I won't try again even if free.

 

Filters I am more fussy on, either AC UPF48R or the Frame premium line, had excellent UOA on both.

 

Air is AC only.

Dexos oils are minimum requirement, aka good enough lubricants. There's obviously better made lubricants on today's market that meet and exceed OEM.
