bad vibrations on the highway! plz help

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Im new here to the site as of today (9/01/16) and I just bought my new (to me) 2007 gmc sierra 1500 2wd.

Ok so I have had this truck for roughly 2 months and I picked her up with only 47k miles! which is fantastic and all but I am having a really bad vibration only on the highway like clock work as soon as my speedometer hits 75+ it seems to me to be coming from the front but it is really hard to tell especially since it shakes my whole truck. everything in the front suspension seems to be really good and tight. so im lost as to what is causing this annoying problem. any help or info would be appreciated!

also, every time I brake and or start off the line it clunks in the rear pretty bad. not every time but 80% of the time it does this clunking in the rear. now I know most of these trucks bind up when braking or taking off from the weight of the truck either going to the front or the rear while stopping or starting. which makes since honestly. but this clunk is way more noticeable and harsher. I think it is the slip yolk on the drive shaft that is slipping and I think it needs to be removed and heavy duty grease put on the yolk. if any of you guys are experiencing this issue as well please tell me how to get rid of it.

Thanks a lot. and have a blessed day!

U- joints ?

Front steering shaft has a clunk do to poor design and lack of lube (the slip joint adjacent to the exhaust manifold) will feel it on minor bumps.

Common issue - back up fast at full throttle for 10-20 feet, then stop then drive forward - the slip yoke will bang on the slip re-position

some trucks came with cast iron drive shafts that rust and get out of balance ...

I agree with Cosmic Charlie, your clunking sound is most likely the slip yoke on the rear drive shaft. Very common and known issue. You might want to check for a recall or TSB on that because I believe at some point they changed the material that the splined shaft was made out of so that it wouldn't hang up as bad. Another thing you might want to check is the fluid level in the transmission. Sometimes if that gets low the slip yoke will not have proper lubrication and bind up.

As for the vibration, if you don't believe there is anything loose in the front end, have you checked the tires? Tires can sometimes cause vibrations like you are describing without the appearance of being defective. When you feel the vibration do you feel it in the steering wheel, by that I mean can you feel the steering wheel trying to oscillate back and forth? If not, can you describe the vibration a little more detail?

Thank you both for the replies... just so your aware yes they did change the slip yolk to a Nickel plated design but I'm not sure of the year that was changed

.. anyhow, I do strongly believe that the rear clunk is the slip yolk binding up due to a lack of lubricant so I will drop that tonight or tomorrow and grease it up real good! Iv never done that kind of job before is it difficult to do?

Also I'll put it in reverse and floor it and then drop it into gear and take off and see if it slips! Thank you again...

OK now for the vibration... yes it definitely can be felt in the steering wheel AND the whole truck (front seats, back seats, bed, ect.) And whIle leaving work today I got onto the highway and got up to about 85 to 90 and it was shaking like crazy.. I just bought the truck and hate that it already has a lot of issues.. I'll also take the tires to my local tire shop and get them checked out.. again guys thank you.. much appreciated!

Removing the drive shaft isn't hard at all. All you need to do is undo the rear universal joint retainer and pop it loose from the differential and then you can slide the driveshaft and yoke out of the transmission. Just be careful to not loose any of the U-joint caps. They are not fastened and can slide right off. You don't want to loose any of those needle bearings or get any kind of trash in them.

I had the Vibration issue in my 05 when I bought it. Turned out to be my master cylinder leaking into my brake booster. Would cause my brakes to start to engage. Rotors would heat up and the truck would shake like crazy!!! Check to see if you have fluid in your brake booster. If not, it is most likely tires!
