USB Charging / CarPlay ports issue

Recommended Posts

I've seen other posts related to this topic but cant find a solid answer for my issue, any help would be appreciated.

Just picked up a 2016 Sierra 2500HD last week and everything worked fine until yesterday, it now has 175miles and the 2 USB ports under the temperature controls aren't working.

When i plug the oem apple charging cable into either one, the phone doesnt charge, doesnt open CarPlay, but it gives me a message on my phone "This accessory may not be supported..."

I located and checked the fuses for the USB ports, they are fine. And there's obviously power to the 2 USB ports in question because they give me a message on my phone but they dont charge it or connect it to carplay.

But when i plug the same oem apple charging cable into either of the 2 USB ports located inside the center console/armrest everything works perfect.

Any thoughts, suggestions or remedies?

I'm not positive about this, but I think the USB ports outside the console are for power only. Now why they aren't charging I'm not sure, but the other problem is normal (I think). I'll have to test this myself as I've only been running my iPod through the plugs inside the console so far.

The USB Ports outside of the console are a direct link to the entertainment system. I also have a 2016 Sierra 2500HD. The dealer showed me to plug in my iPhone in to these ports, or the ones inside the console. Initially, my iPhone 4 wasn't fully compatible with all the functions...it only charged while hooked up or connected the phone only through the BlueTooth. I upgraded to the iPhone 5SE and now all the functions work...CarPlay, texting on the screen or through the voice recognition system. I also purchased a separate Apple 3' charger to leave in my truck. Still works the same. From what I remember the dealer telling me, your phone has to be an iPhone 5 or better for all functions to work. If this isn't your issue, take it back and have them fix the USB ports...
