Paint Chipping in Extra Coated Area

Recommended Posts

So, I'm starting to get these little chips on the the front corners of the truck bed at the bottom on the "protected" area.

This is my first truck and I've seen a plenty of trucks rust in many different areas and I'd like to do what I can to protect what I can, as long as I can.

This is a 2015 Silverado 1500 LT and still has bumper to bumper warranty left. Has anyone run into this and think Chevy would cover this? It seems that this area is more "heavily" protected but it's clearly not working.

I'm going to try my two local dealers this coming week but thought I'd see what everyone else though.

If they won't fix under warranty, would you suggest fixing it properly to help prevent rust? Anything I can put over these corners to stop this? I drive 100% pavement to/from work but I do live in a rural area so gravel is not out of the question.

I don't think they will cover it - going to go under normal wear.

If it did not have the painted rock guard (the bumpy stuff) it would be pretty simple to touch it up and then put a clear rock guard tape over it. Since it is what it is, I would clean it up really well then touch it up. After it cures for a few days tape off a section and spray some plasti-dip or rust-oleum peelable paint in the area. Get a good build over a number of coats. When it gets too beat up peel and redo.

I would say maybe a touch up and plastic caps they are now using. If you don't have any now maybe adding the 6" oem steps I am not found of them, but when I bought my 14 1500 I didn't want to add them and did right after I got it because I just knew this start to occur with gravel driveways I am on from time to time the protection they add is quite nice to try and avoid this along with the peeling that seems common with these trucks

I have always put flat style running boards on my trucks to prevent rock chips. That and mudflaps keep most of the chips away even when driving on gravel roads with AT tires throwing lots of rocks.

Yes, plastic covers and mud flaps. Running Boards help a ton too. Cab corners and bed corners are bad spots so protection early saves major problems later. Most of the time it rusts from the inside out so a spray on rust proofing is a great way to protect your truck.

So, turns out there was incorrect information given to me regarding GM taking care of the warranty, they were simply setting up service with my local dealer who claims the rock guard is an addon. I called my purchasing dealer where the truck was original purchased (I'm 2nd owner) and they installed nothing, claiming they can come from the factory like that and it's a regular paint chip, not covered under warranty.

Looks familiar on my third truck do to paint issues and have a feeling my 17 is no better but will have to see the primer is probably perfect with no chip that paint flakes off not rock chips if you have a rock chip there will be impact to the primer also take your finger and I bet you can peel the rock guard off with your finger nail could on my 15 paint is garbage on these new trucks good luck had mine covered under warranty but my dealer is awesome group of people

After a good wash tonight I noticed on both sides above the wheels on the bed that rust is starting to come through the paint. As far as I can tell, it should be covered under this section of the warranty.

Corrosion:
Body sheet metal
panels are covered against rust for
3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever
comes first.

Given the local dealer don't try to pull this.

Important:
Cosmetic or surface
corrosion, resulting from stone chips
or scratches in the paint, for
example, is not included in sheet
metal coverage.

Any input on this matter? Has anyone run into this on such a new truck? I thought maybe Chevy would have figured this out by now, guess not.
