Does your motor look like this inside?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, changed the oil in my raptor 700 today and adjusted the valves a little while ago (quad is almost 8 years old) and something that I noticed is that the inside of the motor is CLEAN. It looks brand new inside. However, when looking at the inside of the valve cover through my oil filler hole, my 6.0 motor looks dirty. Is it normal to look like this inside?4c3fd2a1f3321ab6c077ff7e5e37e14a.jpg

It's a 2001 Silverado 2500HD with the gas 6.0. It has 113,000 miles. It's been in the family ever since it was brand new, and I know it has had regular scheduled oil changes its whole life. Does the inside of the motor typically look like that?

Just varnish, not dirt. Every engine has it to some degree and its mainly cosmetic. More then likely from using a lower quality non synthetic oil in this case.

Not something i would be concerned about but if it bothers you switch over to a high quality synthetic oil such as Penzzoil platinum, Amsoil, Redline etc.

It will take a couple oil changes before the better quality oil starts to remove it.

That's a good idea, I've been using pennzoil 5w-30 non-synthetic. I chose that because I change it every 3k and I knew if I spent the extra money I would still wanna change synthetic every 3k, also, it has a slight oil leak and I'm told non synthetic shouldn't leak as bad as synthetic due to it not being as slippery. Maybe I'll change over to synthetic and see what hapoens

Man "yamalube" brings me back! I remember my high school days in the early 90's I always ran yamalube in my Yamaha snowmobiles. The exhaust fumes made your eyes tear up, but those sleds ran nice. It would of course be different oil, since the older sleds of that gen were all two strokes, with injected oil.

All non synthetic oil will varnish to a point. From your pic you do not have a problem at all. The reason that you were told that the synthetic oil would leak more is because once the leak starts and you switch over that synthetic oil will clean out that varnish from the leaking area and then make it worse. Synthetic oil will not leak by itself without a leak problem to start with. The reason you think it's thinner, it actually isn't, is because the vecosity is higher. Viscosity is the strength of an oil not to squeezed out from between separate parts. Dip a screw driver blade into conventional oil then try to hold it between your thumb and index finger. The pressure it takes to hold the driver from falling is viscosity. Now try it with synthetic oil it's much harder to hold onto. Higher viscosity.
