fine iron powder on fiter magnet

barry G

Question

I use a billet filter 20 micron stainless mesh.

I love it.

was curious if anyone knows the source of fine irons.

Very fine stuff.

small amount.. like drops in total. wiped off magnet with rag, but curious.

6000 miles to get there.

are bearings steel backed or tin backed?

I also may be gaining recycling from an old oil filter that never captured anything anyway.

I was thinking thrust bearing.. I drive a 5 speed behind the L30.

I did find this:

This is the only wear metal that accurately and linearly increases with the length of time the oil has been in service. It has many sources inside of an engine, most commonly coming from cylinder liners, camshaft lobes, crankshaft journals, and oil pumps.

thanks for reply.

I worked a quick lube in the 90s..over 1000 customers.

this L30/L31 needs to flow or collapse reliefs.(swells filter after not using it at all)

I am thinking now the content is simply the last habits. beautiful temps, pressure.. and a filter that captures.

the company that made the billet is elusive, but great with instruction.

10micron is for racing only.. too small for real world stamina.

high pressure, high volume can do 10micron in a big throttle sprite like a drag race.

it blows the secret little recycled iron lid off the paper element filters for sure...

the iron, I am going to guess hydraulic rollers before anything... normal routines. They are made to not rush a cam lobe...this means hardness value is less than the cam.

the avatar is my trucks odometer, but the engine is way too fresh to match it, could be on its third for all i know. (previous owners loved this truck, I am the third owner - we all added something special over the years).

I am an engine man, a quick lube guy..could not wait to get some good filters. A paper one would not have that captured.

my subaru ea82 is 31 years old... it also has the same company's billet...that one still goes floating perfection. Quite an animal.

I had high levels of iron and aluminum in an oil analysis last year.. Was running Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30, 9,900+ miles, 18 months, all towing 6k plus loads in mostly city traffic. I'm not easy on the throttle. I really don't drive any differently than when I was 16, only passing around a corner on a double-yellow, I'll normally decide against these days.

In the past I just changed regular oil at 3k, and that was that. These days, I don't trust oil recommendations to be in favor of protecting my super-expensive engine over fuel mileage. I upped mine to 10w-30, and my last analysis was night and day improved, with 3k less miles on it.

I've run washable stainless mesh filters in 4-stroke ATVs & dirt bikes in the past, but I'd never consider that option in a GM truck, especially since a stripped model runs close to $30 LARGE. 20 microns sounds a bit on the big side for my liking, given what these things cost.
